JOB SUMMARY
The Copy Cataloger is responsible for shared cataloging of library material according to accepted national standards. This includes describing the content of items and occasionally assigning appropriate Library of Congress classification numbers. Catalog records are regularly edited and updated in OCLC WorldCat, an international database of library collections, and included in the library management system. Various catalog maintenance projects are occasionally undertaken, including those involving review of cataloging problems for shelf-ready material. Responsibility for cataloging priority rush materials is shared on a rotating basis.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Shared cataloging of materials
- Catalogs most formats of monographic material with existing bibliographic copy in various languages.
- Uses AACR2 and RDA cataloging rules as they pertain to cataloging of copy without close supervision and maintains a good understanding of MARC 21.
- Reviews bibliographic records for accuracy and applies all local procedures.
- Keeps current with library and departmental procedures and documentation and recommends changes.
- Edits and assigns LC call numbers when feasible or refers to other catalogers as needed.
- Adds additional access points such as names, additional title information, etc.
- Edits and replaces master OCLC records to correct errors or enhance accessibility.
- Creates holding and item records at all levels of complexity.
- Performs post-cataloging physical processing of material.
Metadata maintenance, problem solving, and special projects
- Utilizes knowledge of the library management system (e.g., bibliographic, holding, item, and order records) and library workflows and practices to solve problems effectively.
- Enhances and maintains existing bibliographic descriptions to assure optimal user access to materials and/or to prepare metadata for output to other platforms and formats.
- Works to support efficient automation of metadata creation.
- Works with batches of bibliographic records from OCLC and other vendors to clean up and/or enhance data.
- Has shared responsibility with other unit members for:
- Catalogs rush material requested via the catalog and purchased by Department.
- Reviews records referred by Department staff for quality.
Teamwork and customer service
- Provides cataloging-related help to other library staff (within and outside the department), including student assistants and OPS employees.
- Serves as backup for the Physical Processing Area if needed.
- Serves on department and/or library committees as needed.
- Consults with staff in other units and departments to resolve complex cataloging problems.
