Sr. Utility Trader

SUMMARY
- Responsible for coordinating and transacting the daily, monthly, seasonal and term power and/or natural gas trading activity. for commercial operations.
- Responsible for the development and implementation of trading and risk management strategies to optimize portfolio of energy assets.
- Leads tactical teams related to commodity trading initiatives.
- Responsible for coordinating financial trade activities under the natural gas price risk management program. Develop and maintain business relationships that support client’s presence in the commercial markets.
- Coordinate reporting activities on power and/or gas transactions, optimization and risk profile for delivery to senior management.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Business, Engineering, or related field. MBA desirable.
Experience
Eight (8) years of energy/natural gas trading and/or scheduling experience or related work required.
Four (4) years of financial gas trading and/or hedging experience is desirable.
Related experience with both power and natural gas trading and/or electric generation is desirable. Additional education may be substituted for work experience.

Abilities
Must have a working knowledge of power and gas trading processes in the Southeast U.S. and be able to conduct short-term trading activities without further training.
Knowledge of financial gas products, (e.g. futures and options), hedging strategies and execution techniques is required.
Must be familiar with regulatory requirements (e.g. FERC, CFTC) to ensure compliant physical and financial energy trading activity.
Must maintain personal energy trading skills and possess managerial skills necessary to provide oversight and work direction to supporting team members and to contract personnel who may be conducting energy trades on behalf of client.
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills are required.
Attention to detail and strong communication and organizational skills are required.
Must be a team player, rely upon available information and experience to make decisions under pressure, and must accept responsibility and feedback for decisions in a professional manner.
Working
Conditions
Office environment with occasional travel to remote facilities, including power plants, pipelines, gas storage facilities and related business offices may be required in performing work responsibilities and in representing client.
Position requires periodic on-call status during evenings and weekends for management of power and gas portfolios.
Essential Functions:
- Coordinates with System Operations and CPM personnel in achieving the most economic dispatch of resources, including determination of operating cost, unit dispatch order, and daily operating parameters and develops a daily strategy for commodity transactions that provides reliability and economic value.
- Analyzes daily power and gas requirements, existing positions and marketplace conditions to determine, recommend and implement appropriate strategies for daily, monthly and seasonal gas supply and/or power procurement.
- Analyzes market conditions through trade publications, personal contacts, electronic trading tools and other publicly available information. Effectively utilize such information to enhance overall economic performance.
- Monitors weather forecasts, transmission availability, gas pipeline utilization, system conditions, outage schedules and other relevant market information to identify looming opportunities and challenges.
- Negotiates daily, monthly, seasonal and term commodity purchases and/or sales and awarding of contracts and terms consistent with the policies and procedures, including established credit and trade authorization limits.
- Direct and manage the daily performance of contractors employed to conduct energy trading.
- Ensure compliance with all trading policies and authority limits; approve transactions as needed.
- Analyzes anticipated unused energy assets (e.g. generating capacity, gas supply, storage and transportation capacity, electric transmission capacity, renewable energy credits, etc.) on a daily, monthly and seasonal basis and recommends optimization strategies for implementation.
- Creates pricing strategies and product designs for transactions that will assist in revenue enhancement and cost savings.
- Directs the daily coordination of natural gas supply and transportation rights/responsibilities contained in multiple power purchase agreements to ensure efficient utilization and optimization of those contracts.
- Promotes the design and implementation of information systems and information sharing mechanisms to facilitate trading operations.
- Maintains accurate deal entry for all executed energy transactions within internal ETRM database(s).
- Responsible for coordinating the execution and reporting of natural gas price risk management program including identification of opportunities outside the parameters of the plan that bring value to client’s fuel portfolio.
- Stays abreast of the short-term energy marketplace to identify and recommend to management new supply, capacity, transportation/storage, and/or transmission opportunities which may provide value.
- Recommends changes to and directly participates and/or leads in negotiating long-term power purchase arrangements as necessary to achieve optimization of the power supply resources. Implements or provides support to RFP process for power purchase agreements.
- Ensures coordination of daily gas availability and pricing with System Operations.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supports the Power Supply division with development and implementation of contracts executed by client
- Provides work direction to Gas Scheduler and other support staff on pipeline/storage reconciliation to ensure accurate daily and monthly settlements and cost allocation.
- Supports Senior Commercial Analyst with enabling agreement contract development (e.g. EEI, NAESB, ISDA) with creditworthy counterparties.
- Supports various departments, contractors and other staff with the development, implementation and monitoring of available credit limits established for energy trading counterparties.
- Gathers and analyzes competitive intelligence information and conducts analysis of relevant data to evaluate gas and/or power projects or possible asset acquisition for recommendation to management and Board. Performs other ad hoc analysis as required.
- Conducts analysis, designs and prepares spreadsheet programs, produces graphs, charts and slides for department presentations. Makes presentations as required to Board Committee(s).
- Builds and maintains relationships with power and gas counterparties.
- Serves as back-up for Gas Scheduler. Must be proficient in gas scheduling and nominations on multiple pipelines and storage facilities.
- Supports Generation Planning function with the development of power and gas price and volume availability projections for use in budget and long-term studies.
- Maintains proficiency in reserving transmission via OASIS.
- Develops and recommends trading controls criteria for personnel and supports the development of tools to assist in monitoring compliance. Updates these controls and tools as needed.
- Supports back-office verification of gas and PPA invoices.
- Identifies and develops tools to support the efficient, real-time dispatch of generating resources within market limitations.
