Job Summary
Irvington Kids Extended Day is seeking a dependable, energetic, and caring Part-Time Aftercare Teacher to join our school-age childcare team.
In this role, you will help create a safe, positive, and engaging afterschool environment for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. The ideal candidate enjoys working with children, communicates well with coworkers, and is comfortable actively supervising students during indoor activities, outdoor play, snack, transitions, and group programming.
This is a hands-on childcare position that requires active participation throughout the day. Team members must be flexible and willing to support different age groups or program spaces based on student-to-staff ratios and daily program needs.
Responsibilities
- Supervise children during after-school hours, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times
- Maintain awareness of student locations, group head counts, and staff-to-child ratios
- Manage classroom behavior using positive behavior management techniques to promote respect and cooperation
- Support daily routines, including attendance, snack, outdoor play, group activities, cleanup, and dismissal
- Maintain open communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress and behavior
- Follow first aid protocols and respond promptly to any medical or behavioral emergencies using CPR, AED operation, and first aid skills
- Support children with special needs by adapting activities and providing individualized attention as needed
- Communicate clearly with coworkers regarding student needs, activities, attendance, and safety concerns
- Accept feedback and follow instructions from program leadership
- Arrive consistently, on time, and prepared for each scheduled shift
- Participate in staff meetings, required training, and professional development.
- Maintain professional boundaries and protect confidential information relating to children, families, and staff
Required Qualifications
- Must be enrolled or eligible to enroll in Oregon’s Central Background Registry
- Current Pediatric First Aid and CPR certification
- Oregon Food Handler Card
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, sit on the floor and lift up to 40 pounds
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working with children in childcare, afterschool programming, summer camp, recreation, education, coaching, tutoring, or a similar setting
- Strong classroom management skills to maintain a positive learning environment
- Knowledge of childhood development principles and behavior management strategies
- First aid certification, including CPR and AED operation, with the ability to respond effectively in emergencies
- Understanding of child development and positive behavior-guidance practices
- Experience with special education or youth development programs is highly desirable
- Ability to facilitate outdoor work activities safely and effectively in various weather conditions
- Excellent communication skills for engaging with children, parents, and team members effectively
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to remain patient, calm, and professional in a fast-paced environment
- Reliable, punctual, flexible, and organized
Schedule
The regular weekly schedule is:
- Monday-Friday: 2:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m.
- One Wednesday a month: 11:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m. to support the school’s monthly early-release schedule
Irvington Kids Extended Day also operates occasional camp days when school is closed but childcare is available. On these days, the employee may:
- Work their regular 2:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m. schedule; or
- Work an extended 9:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. shift based on availability and program need
