Grading Laborer With Advancement Opportunity
Location: Cypress, CA
Schedule: Monday through Friday (Occasional Overtime & Weekend Work Required)
Starting Pay: $24.00 to $26.00 per hour, depending on experience
Position Summary
Empire Demolition & Grading is seeking hardworking individuals with previous grading, excavation, or heavy civil construction experience to join our growing grading division.
This position works directly alongside our grading foremen and equipment operators, assisting with daily grading operations, site preparation, and earthwork activities. We are looking for individuals who understand the pace of grading work, take pride in producing quality work, and want to build a long-term career in the grading industry.
This is more than a labor position. Employees who demonstrate a strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn will have opportunities to advance into positions such as Grade Checker, Equipment Operator, Fine Grade Operator, and Grading Foreman.
Responsibilities
- Assist grading foremen and equipment operators with daily grading operations.
- Perform hand grading using shovels, rakes, picks, and other grading tools.
- Assist with site preparation, rough grading, finish grading, and cleanup.
- Set, move, and maintain grade stakes, hubs, and string lines as directed.
- Help identify grade adjustments and communicate with operators and foremen.
- Load, unload, and organize tools, materials, and equipment.
- Work safely around heavy equipment including excavators, motor graders, dozers, loaders, compactors, and scrapers.
- Assist with trenching, excavation, and earthmoving operations.
- Help maintain clean, organized, and safe jobsites.
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in grading, excavation, demolition, paving, underground utilities, or heavy civil construction preferred.
- Experience working around heavy equipment.
- Strong work ethic with dependable attendance.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to work safely in an active construction environment.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Valid California Driver's License required.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
Preferred Skills
- Experience reading grade stakes or assisting with grade checking.
- Familiarity with grading operations and site preparation.
- Experience using hand levels, laser levels, or GPS grade control is a plus.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification is a plus.
- Basic knowledge of soil compaction and earthwork operations.
- Ability to operate skid steers, compactors, or other small equipment is a plus.
Working Conditions
- Outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
- Frequent lifting of up to 75 pounds.
- Exposure to dust, noise, heavy equipment, and uneven terrain.
- Overtime and occasional weekend work may be required based on project schedules.
