Position Overview:
The Teacher on Special Assignment is a support staff person for the preschool, covering clerical and teaching duties as needed. A warm and inviting manner is needed as this person can often be the first interaction students, families and coworkers will have at the preschool each day. This position has two primary roles 1) stepping into the classroom as needed for teacher breaks, curriculum assistance and substituting as needed and 2) to work as an office assistant, supporting the Preschool Director, teachers and families as appropriate. A Teacher at GUMP educates and cares for children ages approximately 2 1/2 - 10 years old, providing a supportive, enriching and stimulating environment in which the preschool age child can experience physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual growth at his/her own developmental pace. The Teacher on Special Assignment will support the Preschool’s philosophy to provide an interactive and educational opportunity by offering a program of vigorous play, quiet creative activities, and the chance to know, accept and establish relationships with others, and to extend the child’s world beyond his/her family and neighborhood.
The Preschool is an educational and spiritual outreach of the Glendora United Methodist Church, through a cooperative relationship with parents, staff members, church members and the community. Children and their families are introduced to simple stories of the life and teachings of Jesus.
Core Responsibilities:
In the office setting:
· Answer telephone calls and transfer calls to the relevant person
Take telephone messages and distribute
· Greet visitors and screen visitors for authenticity and directs to the correct
person/child/classroom
· Photocopy / File
· Assist with event planning
· Ensure that office equipment is in working order and bring repair requests to the
Director
· Keep front office area and equipment neat and tidy
· Monitor classroom/office supplies and let Director know when supplies run low
· Snack Time related tasks – create menus, prep snacks, clean up snack, disinfect/wash items as appropriate
· Take inventory of snack items and document items needed on supply list
· Create visually appealing bulletin boards for parent information
· Other duties as assigned
Aide / Substitute in the classrooms as needed at request of the Director
· Daily provide teachers with state-mandated breaks
· Develop and maintain a constructive and ongoing rapport with children and parents
· Have proficient knowledge in child development and early education best practices as well as safe, fun age appropriate activities for children
· Assist with developing and implementing age appropriate curriculum to nurture, stimulate, and meet the physical, emotional, intellectual, and social needs of children in the classroom
· Meet individual student needs and challenge all students by adapting and varying instruction and curriculum
· Demonstrate cultural competency and respect for each child's background
· Incorporate cooperative learning strategies
· Support a classroom climate that is organized, light-hearted, and based upon mutual respect
· Collaborate with classroom teachers if applicable
· Effectively and appropriately manage student behavior
· Exhibit age appropriate expectations for student development and behavior
· Participate in open houses, parent conferences, school registration, shows, fundraising events, and other special programs as appropriate and/or as assigned
· Pursue ongoing professional development and growth, including direction gained as an outcome of the teacher evaluation process
Requisite Experience, Education, Skills and Abilities:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Must have at least 12 ECE units and experience in the classroom with children ages 2-5.
- Must have good communication skills and the ability to become part of a great teaching team.
- Meets state guidelines and licensing requirements for teachers, including mandated reporter, harassment and other required trainings
- Have proof of First Aid and CPR training, or willing to obtain
- Must be able to provide proof of a recent physical exam and state-required immunizations upon hiring

Pay: $17.00 - $20.00 per hour
