Wastewater Mechanic

JOB SUMMARY:
The position of Mechanic, under general supervision, shall perform skilled work in the maintenance of department vehicles. The Mechanic with work with the Plant Mechanic to assist and gain experience in the maintenance of mechanical, electrical and electronic equipment at the wastewater treatment plants and pump stations; learn and perform skilled work in the repair and fabrication of equipment by use of welding equipment; learn and perform skilled work in maintaining and repairing piping, fixtures and equipment for gas and fuel systems; perform related work as required. The Mechanic is on call twenty-four hours a day and must provide his or her own transportation to and from the job site.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The following list of essential job functions is not exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
· Provide and consult with work performed by other staff in the maintenance of passenger vehicles and the wastewater camera and vactor trucks.
· Work with the Plant Mechanic to learn and provide maintenance on wastewater pumps and their impellers, blowers, compressors, emergency generators, sludge conveyors and sludge presses.
· Work with the Plant Mechanic to install, modify, maintain, repair, overhaul, test and adjust a variety of other mechanical, pneumatic, HVAC, hydraulic and electrical equipment and machinery.
· Work with the Plant Mechanic to perform plumbing, pipefitting, welding, sheet metal and structural work.
· Work with the Plant Mechanic to learn and perform electrical and electronic work as needed in plant electrical cabinets including replacement of relays and fuses, disconnection/connection of motor leads, phase testing and work with plant instrumentation.
· Work with the Plant Mechanic to perform shaft alignment work as required.
· Lubricate equipment to manufacturer specifications.
· Work with the Plant Mechanic to troubleshoot and analyze faulty equipment.
· Work with the Plant Mechanic to perform predictive and preventive maintenance on plant and pump station equipment.
· Work with the Plant Mechanic to fabricate parts using shop equipment.
· Perform general maintenance and repair on buildings, structures and grounds.
· Assist laborers with clearing blockages from residential sewer laterals and sewer mains, cleaning sewer mains, televising sewers, excavating and repairing sewers.
· Assist operators with plant operational duties including but not limited to entering and cleaning treatment tanks and equipment, hosing tanks and equipment, operating and monitoring equipment.
· Observe safe work practices and ensure that work does not endanger others.
· Perform general housekeeping work including the maintenance of grounds.
· Perform additional duties as needed when required by the Assistant Superintendent of Maintenance or another Department manager.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to work on equipment in confined spaces, wells, or limited access areas which would require him or her to use ladders or steep stairwells to reach the necessary equipment. Ability to do strenuous manual work under varying weather conditions. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, and supervisors. Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
QUALIFICATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or Equivalent and possess a current, valid Ohio Drivers License. Ten years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance of vehicles. Preferred additional experience in the repair of wastewater equipment including pumps of 5 Million Gallon per Day (MGD) capacity or greater, compressors, blowers, vactors and sludge presses.
