Job Summary: An Optician is responsible for helping customers achieve the right type of eyeglasses and lenses in accordance with their eyesight or eye conditions. Their duties include communicating with other eye care professionals to receive prescriptions and send them to laboratory technicians, providing customers with frames to fit their prescriptions and maintaining accurate customer data regarding their current or updated prescriptions. Opticians usually work as part of a team of eye care professionals that include Ophthalmologists and Optometrists. Their customers are people who have had an eye exam and received a prescription for corrective lenses. Opticians need to have a thorough understanding of the different types of optical aids available and their duties usually include interpreting the results of eye examinations, using prescriptions written by Ophthalmologists and Optometrists.
This position handles a wide range of Optician related tasks, including but not limited to:
Sales, fitting, adjustments, dispensing, repairs and ordering eyeglasses.
Knowledge in optics, reading eyeglass prescriptions on a manual lensometer including
simple and compounded prism.
Advising patients on frame weights, materials, styles, and colors
Recommending lenses, coatings, and frames to suit the customers’ prescription and
lifestyle needs.
Accurately reading insurance benefit sheets and quoting patients the correct co-pay
amounts.
Preparing orders for dispense by checking prescriptions, measurements, verifying
coatings and that orders were placed accurately.
Notifying patients of order status, following up with laboratories for late orders, and
documenting customer interactions.
Adjusting frames so they fit properly.
Troubleshooting patient complaints, when they arise, to ensure proper vision can be
achieved, even when advanced adjustments are needed.
Posting sales and balancing day sheets at the end of the day
Processing insurance orders with VSP, EyeMed and Spectera
Keeping track of inventory, entering patient data into the computer, Excel and Word
proficiency preferred
Responsible for the appearance and upkeep of the optical center; including but not
limited to cleaning counters, dispensing tables, chairs, mirrors, frames and frame
boards, optical laboratory, glass display shelves and windows.
Strong sales skills, aimed at meeting both the stores and self-sales targets, while
following company policy.
Able to give instructions and product information in a clear and concise manner to
patients, while maintaining their professionalism.
Assist with equipment and tool maintenance.
Develops and maintains good working relationships with all departments, the
management team, and staff.
Job Requirements:
High school diploma or GED.
2-years previous optician experience
Must be able to enter customer data accurately.
Needs attention to detail and time management skills.
Demonstrate reliability and punctuality.
Reliable transportation for working at different locations on preassigned days
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $16.50 - $21.00 per hour
