Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Machine Shop Manager to lead our CNC machining production team, optimize shop floor workflow, and ensure high-quality parts are delivered on time. You will oversee daily operations, manage and mentor setup machinists, coordinate outside processing vendors, and proactively mitigate production risks.
Key Responsibilities
- Production Scheduling: Plan and schedule jobs across CNC machines (including Swiss turning and multi-axis equipment) to meet delivery deadlines and maximize throughput.
- Outside Process Management: Coordinate and manage relationships with external vendors for secondary operations (e.g., heat treating, anodizing, plating, passivating, and centerless grinding). Track lead times, verify quality certifications, and ensure parts flow seamlessly back into final inspection/shipping.
- Technical Troubleshooting: Directly assist the team in diagnosing and resolving complex machining issues on the floor (e.g., tool wear, surface finish issues, programming errors, and mechanical bottlenecks).
- Risk Management: Proactively identify and mitigate production risks—such as material delays, vendor bottlenecks, machine downtime, and safety hazards—to ensure continuous, uninterrupted workflow.
- Team Leadership: Supervise, mentor, and train machinists. Foster a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Quality & Process Control: Partner with Quality Assurance to maintain tight tolerances, minimize scrap rates, and implement corrective actions when defects occur.
- Shop Floor Operations: Manage tooling inventory, material staging, and preventative maintenance (PM) schedules for all equipment.
Qualifications
- Experience: 5+ years of CNC machining experience, with at least 2–3 years in a supervisory or leadership role within a precision machine shop.
- Vendor Coordination: Proven experience managing outside manufacturing processes, including negotiating lead times, coordinating shipping/receiving logistics, and verifying vendor quality standards.
- Troubleshooting Expertise: Proven ability to diagnose, analyze, and resolve technical machining and setup issues quickly on the shop floor.
- Risk Management Mindset: Experience planning for contingencies, managing machine capacity, and maintaining strict safety compliance to minimize operational downtime and accidents.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of multi-axis CNC machining, tooling, and programming principles (experience with high-precision Swiss-type turning is a major plus).
Pay: $40.00 - $50.00 per hour
