Salary Range: $95,000-$103,500
Minimum Knowledge and Experience:
- 3+ years operational experience in an EHS roll or within a rail organization.
- Demonstrated understanding of the concepts within systems safety
- 30hr OSHA 1910 or 1926 Certification (both preferred)
- Understanding of the operational implication of theoretical concepts such as safety culture through understanding of FRA , CFR and OSHA regulations
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Competent in Microsoft Teams, PowerPoint, and Adobe
Skills:
- Able to Interpret state and federal regulatory governance.
- Safety program management and delivery
- Effectively communicate safety strategy and direction with business units
- Maintain effective relationships with external stakeholders.
- Assist in the investigation of Department of Labor issues.
- Able to interpret operational direction in a safety context in each department.
- Behave in a manner that supports the principles of ‘just’ and ‘learning’ cultures, thus advancing our safety culture.
- Judge tasking requirements in order to effectively manage time.
Key Accountabilities (Essential Job Duties):
Health & Safety Planning
- Demonstrates understanding and adheres to the KCS principles of Employee Engagement, Operational Excellence, Safety & Security, and Economic Performance
- Provide governance for the operational safety compliance plan with respect to health and safety requirements as required within the contract.
- Develop an inspection schedule targeting OSHA 1910 regulations and first aid supplies.
- Inspect and evaluate workplace environments, equipment, and practices to ensure compliance with OSHA 1910 & 1926 safety standards and regulations.
- Conduct Job Hazard Analysis’s for the Mechanical and Engineering Departments.
- Maintain inventories of hazardous materials
- Assist in the development and retention of health and safety content of safety related training.
- Maintain expert level knowledge in Department of Labor regulations directly impacting health and safety.
- Ensure all facilities have emergency evacuation plans and conduct training/drills.
- Event (accident/incident) Management
- Investigate health related complaints.
- Some out-of-office hours may be required. The position is on the on-call roster (24 hours every 6-12 days)
- Participate in investigations and prepare reports within required timelines.
Community Engagement - Safety Outreach
- Assist in the management of KCS safety related community engagement activities.
- Assist in the management of KCS / Operation Lifesaver volunteer’s and events.
- Assist in the management of KCS / Operation Lifesaver annual budget and materials procurement.
Operational Risk Management
- Assist Systems Safety Senior Managers in the governance for operational risk management including the conduct of risk assessments.
Change Management
- Assist Systems Safety Senior Managers with guidance for operational change management processes with the business units.
- Assist with the review of change management plans with business units.
Engagement
- Represent safety at various meetings- safety committees and calls.
- Develop and maintain a trust-based constructive/productive working relationship with the leadership and management of the business units.
- Liaison with specialists such as industrial hygienists
- Publication of safety culture communication (EG bulletins/flashes)

- Drug and alcohol screening: Employment contingent upon passing pre-employment drug and alcohol screen. Also, contingent upon receiving a favorable background check. Must pass a physical examination.
