Since 1961, PAYH has provided a Christ-centered, licensed, and accredited residential program offering a second chance to young men aged 16-21 facing life challenges. Our program focuses on spiritual growth, character development, and equipping young men with the tools for a healthy, productive future.
The Role: Join our dynamic and supportive team as a Full-Time Mentor in our Christian Residential Program. This role places you at the heart of our mission, where you will provide direct guidance, consistent support, and positive mentorship to the young men in our care. You will actively contribute to their spiritual, emotional, and physical development, helping them navigate challenges and reach their full potential.
Key Responsibilities:
Spiritual Leadership: Model and guide young men in their Christian faith journey through daily interactions, devotions, and mentorship.
Life Skills Development: Teach and reinforce essential life skills, including critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving.
Behavioral Guidance: Provide consistent, compassionate support and guidance to young men facing behavioral and emotional challenges.
Physical Training and Recreation: Lead daily physical training, sports, and outdoor activities.
Mentorship and Relationship Building: Build strong, trusting relationships with the young men, serving as a positive role model and mentor.
Daily Living Support: Participate in and supervise daily activities, including meals, chores, and recreational time.
Collaborative Teamwork: Work closely with other staff members to ensure a consistent and supportive environment.
Adherence to Program Structure: Consistently uphold and enforce the rules and structure of the PAYH program.
Qualifications:
Mature and deeply committed Christian faith, with a passion for mentoring youth.
Experience (8+ years preferred) working with at-risk youth or in behavioral health.
Ability to handle challenging behaviors and emotional situations with patience and empathy.
Physically fit with a passion for outdoor activities and sports, and a willingness to lead team sports;
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to model and teach strong work ethic, discipline, and character development.
Ability to adapt to changing situations and work within a dynamic environment.
Proficiency in basic computer applications for documentation and communication.
Valid driver's license.
Ability to pass a criminal background check.
High school diploma or equivalent (preferred);
Understanding and willingness to work a non-traditional schedule - including evenings, weekends, and potential overnight shifts.
Demands of Position:
While our mentors work in eight-hour shifts, it's important to understand that this is not a typical 9-to-5 role. Our commitment to our young men requires flexible availability, including an on-call rotation to provide individualized support outside of typical school hours. This means mentors may be required to work evenings, weekends, or spend extended periods on-site as needed.
Mentors must model a life that demonstrates the values that align with our mission and vision. As an ambassador for the ministry, this individual needs to place a high degree of importance on conduct and values that reflect a priority towards their faith in Christ and family. Building relationships with the young men who are angry and hurt, and holding each one consistently to the same standard without taking their words and actions personally. To present a Christ-like attitude in spirit to the young men for whom the PAYH is responsible. This is accomplished through example, teaching, discipline, affirmation, and acknowledgment that we are answering God’s call.
