Job Overview
The Senior CAD Technician is responsible for the preparation, coordination, and quality control of land surveying drawings. This role supports surveyors and project managers by producing accurate, detailed plans and exhibits for public and private development projects.
The ideal candidate has extensive experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, survey data processing, surface modeling, and construction plan production, along with strong technical judgment and the ability to mentor junior drafting staff. Drawings must be complete and accurate as well as comply with local, state, and client drafting standards.
This position requires an individual with a high level of attention to detail and organization. Must be able to work well independently and collaboratively.

Key Responsibilities
Survey Drafting & Data Processing
- Process and import field data from GNSS, total stations, and data collectors.
- Draft boundary surveys, topographic surveys, ALTA/NSPS surveys, and plats.
- Create legal description exhibits and easement exhibits.
- Develop digital terrain models (DTMs), contours, and surface analyses.
- Perform linework cleanup and coordinate geometry (COGO) adjustments.
Modeling & Analysis
- Build and manage surfaces, corridors, alignments, and pipe networks in Civil 3D.
- Perform grading analysis, volume calculations, and earthwork comparisons.
- Coordinate utility conflict analysis and plan revisions.
- Support BIM or 3D modeling initiatives where applicable.
Coordination & Project Support
- Collaborate with project managers and surveyors to meet deadlines.
- Participate in coordination meetings and assist in resolving design conflicts.
- Support permit submittals and agency review responses.
- Maintain organized digital file structures and documentation.
Qualifications
Required
- 10+ years of progressive CAD experience in civil engineering and/or surveying.
- Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Strong understanding of civil plan production and survey drafting principles.
- Experience processing field survey data and creating surfaces.
- Ability to interpret engineering plans, specifications, and legal descriptions.
Preferred
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Drafting, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Experience with Carlson Survey, MicroStation, or GIS software.
- Knowledge of local municipal and DOT drafting standards.
- Experience with 3D modeling, BIM coordination, or LiDAR data.
- Familiarity with stormwater modeling outputs and integration into plan sets.
