HR & Payroll Generalist

Position Summary
Seeking a detail-oriented and proactive HR & Payroll Generalist to manage core HR administrative functions, benefits and 401(k) administration, as well as end-to-end payroll processing. This role is well-suited to someone who enjoys wearing multiple hats, is comfortable working across systems, and wants to grow with a company in an active build-out phase. Prior experience in the insurance industry, and/or exposure to broader accounting functions is a plus.
Key Responsibilities
HR Administration
- Manage day-to-day HR administrative operations, including employee records, onboarding/offboarding, and HRIS data integrity
- Maintain employee handbooks, policies, and compliance documentation
- Serve as a point of contact for employee questions related to payroll, benefits, policies, and general HR matters
- Support recruiting coordination as needed (scheduling, offer letters, background checks)
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws (FLSA, FMLA, ADA, EEO, etc.)
Payroll Processing
- Own and process payroll cycles end-to-end, ensuring accuracy of hours, deductions, garnishments, and tax withholdings
- Maintain payroll records and ensure compliance with compensation related regulations
- Reconcile payroll reports and resolve discrepancies
- Experience with Paycom strongly preferred (setup, reporting, self-service administration)
Benefits & 401(k) Administration
- Administer employee benefits programs (medical, dental, vision, life, disability) including enrollment, changes, and vendor coordination
- Manage 401(k) plan administration, including employee enrollment, contribution changes, compliance testing coordination, annual compliance reporting and vendor/TPA relationship management
- Support annual open enrollment processes
- Reconcile benefits invoices and resolve discrepancies with carriers/vendors
Cross-Functional Support
- Partner with Accounting/Finance on payroll-related journal entries, benefits accruals, and reporting
- Support HR reporting and analytics for leadership (headcount, turnover, benefits utilization, etc.)
- Assist with special projects related to HR, ad hoc reporting and process improvement as needed
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree preferred; high school diploma or equivalent required
- 3+ years of experience in an HR Generalist or HR & Payroll role
- Hands-on payroll processing experience
- Demonstrated experience with employee benefits and/or 401(k) administration
- Strong working knowledge of employment law and HR compliance fundamentals
- Excellent organizational skills and high attention to detail
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
Preferred
- In-office in Knoxville, TN
- Direct experience with Paycom, AMS360, QuickBooks
- Accounting experience
- Prior experience in the insurance industry (agency operations, producer compensation structures, or related) — a plus, not required
- PHR, SHRM-CP, or similar HR certification

Pay: $60,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
