Desired Skills and Qualifications:
- Proficiency in ASL and sign language interpreting
- VQAS Level III certification, equivalent credential recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, or an EIPA Written Test plus a minimum EIPA Performance Test score of 3.5
- Education or interpreting training preferred; high school diploma or equivalent required
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaborative skills
- Knowledge of K-12 educational environments and the needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Capacity to maintain confidentiality and uphold professionalism
- Previous experience interpreting in educational settings, especially supporting students with IEPs, is strongly preferred
Key Responsibilities:
- Interpret spoken communication in classrooms, assemblies, field trips, and other school activities
- Adapt interpreting methods to fit individual student needs and developmental levels
- Collaborate closely with teachers, special education staff, and service providers
- Attend and support IEP and staff meetings as needed
- Provide feedback on student communication needs or barriers
- Maintain confidentiality and follow all school policies
