Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Transmission & Distribution Engineer to support a major electric utility in Southern California. This is a senior-level, hands-on engineering position focused on the design and analysis of overhead transmission and distribution systems.
This is primarily an engineering design and execution role, not a project management position. The successful candidate will independently develop engineering designs, build and troubleshoot PLS-CADD models, perform pole and foundation analysis, and review engineering designs completed by other engineers.
The workload is expected to consist of approximately 75% overhead line design and 25% pole and foundation analysis.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform detailed engineering design for overhead electric transmission, subtransmission, and distribution systems.
- Independently build, develop, and troubleshoot PLS-CADD models from scratch.
- Perform structural and line analysis using PLS-CADD and PLS-Pole.
- Complete pole loading, structural, and foundation analyses for new and existing utility infrastructure.
- Develop engineering calculations, models, drawings, and other technical design deliverables.
- Review engineering designs and calculations completed by other engineers and provide technical feedback.
- Ensure designs meet applicable engineering standards, safety requirements, QA/QC procedures, and utility design criteria.
- Apply California GO 95, NESC, ASCE, and other applicable codes and standards to engineering designs.
- Support projects involving distribution systems ranging from approximately 4 kV through 33 kV.
- Support subtransmission and transmission projects at 66 kV, 115 kV, and potentially 220 kV.
- Resolve design-related technical issues that arise during engineering and construction.
- Participate in occasional field visits and site inspections as required by individual projects.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less-experienced engineers.
- Assist with maintaining and improving engineering standards, specifications, and design practices.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
- 7+ years of relevant engineering experience in electric utility transmission and/or distribution line design.
- Advanced, hands-on experience with PLS-CADD.
- Demonstrated ability to independently build and troubleshoot PLS-CADD models.
- Hands-on experience with PLS-Pole and overhead line/pole analysis.
- Strong understanding of transmission and/or distribution line engineering and design.
- Experience working with electric utilities or utility engineering/consulting organizations.
- Knowledge of California GO 95, NESC, ASCE, and applicable utility engineering standards.
- Experience preparing and reviewing engineering calculations and technical design deliverables.
- Experience with AutoCAD.
- Ability to work independently in a senior-level engineering capacity while collaborating with other engineers and technical stakeholders.
- Ability to work onsite in Pomona, California every Wednesday and Thursday.
Preferred Qualifications
- Active California Professional Engineer (PE) license, preferably Civil.
- Master's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Experience designing overhead lines across multiple voltage classes, including distribution, subtransmission, and transmission systems.
- Experience with PLS-Caisson.
- Experience with SPIDAcalc.
- Experience performing pole and foundation design or analysis.
- Previous experience supporting California electric utilities.
- Experience reviewing and providing technical oversight of engineering designs completed by other engineers.
- Field engineering, construction support, inspection, or emergency restoration experience.
Work Environment & Travel
This is a hybrid position based in Pomona, CA, with onsite attendance required every Wednesday and Thursday. This position cannot be performed fully remotely.
Candidates who are not currently local may be considered but would be responsible for their own relocation expenses.
Occasional project-driven field visits may be required and could include overnight travel.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a technically strong utility engineer who remains hands-on with engineering design and PLS modeling. You should be comfortable taking ownership of complex line designs, developing PLS-CADD models rather than simply reviewing them, troubleshooting technical issues, performing engineering calculations, and reviewing the work of other engineers.
Candidates whose recent experience has primarily focused on project management rather than hands-on engineering design may not be the best fit for this position.
Pay: $90.00 - $110.00 per hour
Application Question(s):
- How many years of hands-on experience do you have using PLS-CADD for electric utility transmission and/or distribution line design?
- Are you able to independently build and troubleshoot PLS-CADD models from scratch?
- Do you have hands-on experience using PLS-Pole for utility pole design and/or structural analysis?
- Do you currently hold an active California Professional Engineer (PE) license?
- Briefly describe your transmission and/or distribution line design experience, including the voltage classes you have worked with and how you have used PLS-CADD and PLS-Pole in your designs.
