About the Company
We are an established, owner-operated landscaping and snow removal company headquartered near Pearl River, NY, serving a loyal mix of commercial and residential clients across Rockland County, NY and Bergen County, NJ market with approx. 500 accounts. We have built a strong local reputation for quality workmanship, reliable service, and long-standing client relationships.
We are now investing in the next phase of growth as part of a broader regional strategy. We are hiring our first General Manager to take ownership of day-to-day operations, professionalize the business, and grow alongside it — with a clear path into a Chief Operating Officer (COO) role as the company expands into new markets and service lines.
Position Summary
The General Manager owns the full P&L of our operations. You will lead all operations, sales, and client delivery across landscape maintenance, installation / enhancements, and snow & ice management. You are accountable for revenue growth, operating margin, safety, crew productivity, and client retention — while building the systems, team, and culture needed to scale.
This is a hands-on, wear-many-hats leadership role well-suited to an ambitious and entrepreneurial operator. You will spend time in the field with crews and on client sites, in the truck driving routes and estimates, and at the desk managing scheduling, billing, and planning with the owner. As the business grows, so does your scope — this role is designed to grow into a COO seat.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Service Delivery
- Full operational oversight: Own day-to-day operations across maintenance, enhancements, design-build, and snow & ice management.
- Establish and enforce production standards, routing, job costing, and quality control across all crews.
- Direct the snow operations program — dispatch readiness, weather monitoring, subcontractor coordination, salt/material inventory, and 24/7 service response through the winter season.
- Oversee fleet, equipment, and yard — maintenance schedules, capex planning, DOT and OSHA compliance.
- Partner with office staff on scheduling, dispatching, and customer communications.
Financial & Commercial Leadership
- Own the annual budget, monthly P&L, and job-level margin tracking.
- Drive pricing discipline, estimating accuracy, and cost controls (labor, materials, equipment, subs).
- Lead sales and account management — grow wallet share with existing clients and win new commercial and residential business.
- Manage contracts, renewals, and vendor agreements.
People & Culture
- Lead, coach, and develop crew leaders and office staff.
- Recruit, onboard, and retain top field talent; build a bilingual (English/Spanish) workforce pipeline.
- Champion safety — set the standard for jobsite safety, training, PPE compliance, and incident response.
- Build a performance culture grounded in accountability, professional standards, and career pathways from crew to leadership.
Strategy & Growth
- Partner with the owner to design and execute the broader regional growth strategy — new service lines, market expansion, and potential tuck-in acquisitions.
- Build out the systems, SOPs, KPIs, and reporting infrastructure needed to scale into multi-location operations.
- Evaluate and implement technology (CRM, routing, job costing, timekeeping, fleet telematics) that improves margin and scalability.
Qualifications
Required
- 5+ years of experience in the landscaping, snow & ice, or a related field-services industry (tree care, irrigation, hardscape, facilities services), with at least some supervisory or crew-lead responsibility.
- Working knowledge of landscape maintenance, basic installation, and commercial snow & ice operations.
- Comfort with financials at a small-business level — reading a P&L, estimating jobs, tracking labor efficiency, and managing to a budget.
- Hands-on ability to recruit, train, and lead crew members, foremen, and office staff.
- Strong client-service orientation — willing and able to sell, estimate, and own client relationships.
- Familiarity with DOT, OSHA, and NJ licensing requirements applicable to the trade (or willingness to obtain).
- Comfort with standard office tools and industry software (Aspire, LMN, Jobber, ServiceTitan, or similar) — or the aptitude to learn quickly.
- Valid driver's license with a clean record; ability to be on call and in the field during snow events.
Preferred / A Plus
- Bachelor's degree in business, management, or a related field
- NALP, Snowfighters Institute, ASCA, or similar industry certifications
