Job Overview
The Program Coordinator is responsible for planning, organizing, and overseeing a wide variety of youth and adult sports programs, leagues, tournaments, camps, and special events through the Shafter Recreation & Park District. This position plays a vital role in creating positive recreational experiences by coordinating programming, supervising staff and volunteers, maintaining facilities, and building strong relationships within the community. The ideal candidate is organized, energetic, community-focused, and passionate about providing high-quality recreational opportunities for participants of all ages.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate, and implement seasonal sports leagues, camps, clinics, tournaments, and special events.
- Develop program schedules, practice schedules, game schedules, and facility usage plans.
- Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate part-time staff, coaches, officials, volunteers, and program leaders.
- Coordinate registration, team formation, scheduling, and participant communication.
- Organize and oversee youth and adult recreational programs, including specialty and adaptive recreation programs.
- Inspect athletic fields, courts, gyms, and recreation facilities to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Coordinate facility reservations and scheduling for practices, games, tournaments, and community events.
- Promote programs through community outreach, partnerships, and collaboration with the District's marketing team.
- Maintain accurate program records, participation reports, budgets, inventories, and evaluations.
- Develop relationships with schools, community organizations, and local partners to expand recreational opportunities.
- Assist with planning and implementation of District-wide festivals, community events, and special projects.
- Conduct coaches' meetings, staff trainings, and sports clinics as needed.
- Ensure compliance with District policies, safety standards, and risk management procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Sports Management, Physical Education, or a related field preferred. (Or equivalent experience)
- Equivalent combination of education and a minimum of three (3) years of experience in recreation, athletics, or program management may be substituted.
- Experience organizing sports leagues, tournaments, camps, or recreational programming preferred.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Ability to supervise staff, volunteers, and participants in a positive and professional manner.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and recreation management software is preferred.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as program schedules require.
- Valid California Driver's License preferred.
- CPR/First Aid certification, or ability to obtain upon hire.
