Overview
The 2nd Shift Assistant Supervisor is responsible for direct supervision of manufacturing operations during second shift to ensure production goals are achieved safely, efficiently, and in compliance with quality standards and company policies.
This position provides hands-on leadership to production employees, enforces safety and attendance standards, coordinates labor and material resources, and ensures accurate production reporting and shift-to-shift communication. The Assistant Supervisor serves as the primary operational authority on second shift in the absence of senior management.
The role supports company objectives related to safety, quality, delivery, cost control, and workforce development.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Safety & Regulatory Compliance
- Enforce all OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
- Conduct and document safety meetings and toolbox talks.
- Ensure proper PPE usage and safe machine operation at all times.
- Immediately report, investigate, and document injuries, near-misses, and safety incidents.
- Promote a proactive safety culture through hazard identification and corrective action.
Production & Operational Oversight
- Supervise daily second shift manufacturing activities to meet production schedules and customer demand.
- Allocate employees to appropriate work centers based on skill level, production priorities, and staffing needs.
- Monitor hourly production output and address performance gaps in real time.
- Ensure all production orders are properly staged, documented, and completed
- Troubleshoot equipment, material, staffing, and process issues to minimize downtime.
- Coordinate with Maintenance to address breakdowns and preventative maintenance needs.
- Ensure accurate inventory transactions and material handling practices.
- Submit end-of-shift production reports and communicate carryover work to first shift leadership.
Quality Assurance
- Ensure adherence to all quality standards, inspection procedures, and documentation requirements.
- Monitor scrap, rework, and non-conforming material; implement corrective actions as needed.
- Participate in root cause investigations and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Reinforce accountability for workmanship and production accuracy.
Supervision & Workforce Management
- Direct, coach, and mentor production employees to drive performance and engagement.
- Administer progressive discipline in accordance with company policy and applicable labor agreements.
- Enforce attendance, timekeeping, conduct, and workplace standards consistently.
- Approve or recommend shift-level time-off requests based on operational needs.
- Participate in hiring, onboarding, and training of new employees.
- Maintain training records, work instructions, and departmental documentation.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing performance feedback.
Union-Aligned Responsibilities (If Applicable)
- Supervise bargaining unit employees in accordance with the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
- Ensure consistent application of work rules, seniority provisions, job classifications, and overtime distribution procedures.
- Partner with Human Resources in grievance responses and disciplinary actions.
- Maintain professional and productive working relationships with union representatives.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities for operational efficiency and cost reduction.
- Recommend and support process improvements.
- Support implementation of lean manufacturing and operational excellence initiatives.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Associate’s Degree in Business, Manufacturing, or Technical discipline preferred
- OR
- Minimum five (5) years of manufacturing experience, including supervisory responsibility.
Experience with ERP systems, material management, and production scheduling strongly preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
- Exposure to manufacturing noise, moving machinery, metal materials, oils, and varying temperatures.
- Ability to work assigned second shift schedule and overtime as required. (3pm - 11pm)
