Job Summary
City Wildlife, Washington, DC’s only wildlife rehabilitation center, is seeking an experienced part-time Animal Care Technician to join our dedicated animal care team. This hands-on position is responsible for providing exceptional care and rehabilitation to native wildlife while supporting medical treatments, supervising daily animal care operations, and mentoring staff, interns, and volunteers.
Reporting to the Animal Care Manager, the successful candidate will have advanced wildlife rehabilitation skills, strong clinical experience, and a commitment to providing the highest standards of animal welfare in a fast-paced rehabilitation environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide daily husbandry, feeding, enrichment, and rehabilitation for a wide variety of native wildlife.
- Administer medications and treatments, including oral, subcutaneous, and intramuscular medications.
- Perform physical examinations, collect diagnostic samples, and assist with laboratory procedures.
- Assist veterinarians with medical procedures and monitor patients under anesthesia.
- Apply rehabilitation techniques including bandaging, splinting, wound management, and supportive care.
- Maintain accurate patient records using WRMD.
- Supervise daily shifts, delegate tasks, and ensure efficient workflow.
- Train and mentor volunteers, interns, and junior animal care staff.
- Assist with front desk operations and respond to public inquiries when needed.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, biosecurity, animal housing, and enrichment.
- Support wildlife releases and adapt rehabilitation plans to meet individual patient needs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of two years of wildlife rehabilitation or comparable animal care experience in a wildlife hospital, rehabilitation center, zoo, or veterinary setting.
- Demonstrated experience handling a wide variety of native wildlife species, including birds, mammals, reptiles, and raptors.
- Experience administering medications, performing treatments, and assisting with diagnostic and medical procedures.
- Strong leadership skills with experience training or mentoring staff, interns, or volunteers.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
- Experience using WRMD or similar medical record systems.
- Completion of continuing education through IWRC, NWRA, or equivalent.
- Apprentice or Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator in the District of Columbia, or the ability to obtain DC wildlife rehabilitation permits.
