Role Overview
BEPC is seeking a skilled Controls Automation Engineer to join our client's manufacturing engineering team in Lenexa, Kansas. This opportunity is ideal for candidates with experience in industrial automation, PLC programming, controls engineering, manufacturing systems, and Rockwell Automation platforms.
In this role, you will support the design, programming, troubleshooting, and optimization of industrial automation systems while ensuring reliable production operations. The ideal candidate has strong experience with Rockwell Automation (Allen-Bradley) PLCs, HMI/SCADA systems, industrial networking, and manufacturing process improvements.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot PLC programs using Rockwell Automation (Allen-Bradley) platforms, including ControlLogix, CompactLogix, and MicroLogix.
- Configure and support HMI/SCADA systems, including FactoryTalk View SE/ME, Ignition, or similar platforms.
- Support the full lifecycle of automation projects from concept and design through installation, startup, validation, and production handoff.
- Diagnose and resolve PLC, instrumentation, electrical, and control system issues to minimize production downtime.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, including electrical schematics, P&IDs, control narratives, and programming standards.
- Collaborate with process engineers to optimize manufacturing throughput, quality, and safety.
- Perform routine audits of automation systems and recommend improvements and preventative maintenance.
- Provide technical support for manufacturing operations, including occasional on-call support.
- Train maintenance technicians and production personnel on control system operation and troubleshooting.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA, ISA/IEC, and internal engineering standards.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance manufacturing performance and system reliability.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- 3–5 years of hands-on industrial automation experience within a manufacturing environment.
- Strong experience with Rockwell Automation / Allen-Bradley PLC platforms (ControlLogix, CompactLogix, and Studio 5000 / RSLogix 5000).
- Experience configuring HMI/SCADA systems such as FactoryTalk View, Wonderware, Ignition, or similar.
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols including EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, Profibus, and Modbus.
- Experience with instrumentation, sensors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), servo systems, and motor control centers (MCCs).
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and mechanical drawings.
- Working knowledge of NEC/NFPA 70, NFPA 79, OSHA 29 CFR 1910, and industrial safety standards.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Experience
- Rockwell Automation Certified Logix Designer (CLD) certification.
- Experience with ISA-88 batch control systems.
- Experience integrating Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) with ERP platforms such as SAP.
- Experience with industrial robotics, including FANUC, ABB, or KUKA.
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologies.
- Experience within food & beverage, chemical, packaging, pharmaceutical, or life sciences manufacturing.
- Familiarity with industrial cybersecurity best practices for control systems.
Work Environment
This position is performed onsite in a manufacturing environment and requires regular exposure to industrial equipment, production machinery, and manufacturing operations. Candidates should be comfortable standing, walking, climbing ladders or elevated platforms as needed, and supporting automation systems during production. Occasional travel (up to 10%) and off-shift or weekend support may be required for critical projects or production needs.
