About HGP
HGP is a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to reshaping healthcare by empowering physicians to reclaim their agency, empowering patients to understand the systems that impact their care, and restoring the sacred physician-patient relationship.
HGP provides operational playbooks, financial frameworks, educational resources, and practical tools drawn from real-world startup and clinical scaling experience - including scaling operations from zero to 350,000 clinical tests and from one physician to 200+ team members.
We believe healthcare is optimized for the wrong incentives, and that meaningful change begins at the bedside - by equipping physicians and patients with knowledge, systems, and tools that dissolve administrative barriers.
Position Summary
The Mid-Level Software Engineer will play a hands-on role in building and stabilizing HGP's medical education platform, internal tools, and software infrastructure. This role is ideal for an engineer who can move beyond assigned tickets, understand system context, and help turn HGP's mission into scalable technology.
This position requires strong execution, practical technical judgment, and the ability to work across product, operations, and engineering needs. The engineer will contribute to feature development, system reliability, documentation, testing, admin tooling, and long-term platform maintainability.
Core Responsibilities
System Documentation & Architecture
- Audit, document, and maintain a clear understanding of the platform's codebase, architecture, dependencies, and integration points.
- Identify technical debt, structural risks, and opportunities to improve maintainability and scalability.
- Contribute to architecture discussions and help translate technical decisions into clear documentation.
Platform Stability & Feature Development
- Support the platform in reaching and maintaining a stable, user-accessible state by identifying and resolving functionality blockers.
- Design, implement, and test prioritized feature enhancements that improve user experience, reliability, and operational efficiency.
- Own discrete technical workstreams from requirements clarification through implementation, testing, and deployment support.
Testing & Quality Assurance
- Review, fix, and expand automated test coverage to ensure new and existing functionality performs as expected.
- Improve test reliability so results accurately reflect platform performance and production readiness.
- Support QA workflows, regression testing, and release-readiness checks.
Messaging, Notifications & Workflow Reliability
- Debug and improve messaging, notification, and workflow layers to support consistent, timely, and reliable communication across the platform.
- Investigate production issues, root causes, and recurring technical failures, then implement durable fixes.
- Monitor reliability concerns and propose system improvements where appropriate.
Admin Tools & Internal Operations
- Design, build, and maintain administrative tools with appropriate access controls, user permissions, and operational safeguards.
- Create tools and workflows that help HGP scale education programs, internal operations, and resource distribution.
- Collaborate with operations, product, and leadership stakeholders to translate real-world workflow needs into technical solutions.
Collaborative Engineering Practices
- Participate in sprint planning, code reviews, stand-ups, and technical decision-making.
- Maintain coding standards and contribute to long-term scalability, security, and maintainability.
- Mentor junior engineers where appropriate and help strengthen team development practices.
Qualifications
- 3-5+ years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated experience building production software.
- Strong understanding of software architecture, debugging, testing, version control, and development workflows.
- Ability to design and implement reliable features with moderate independence.
- Experience working across frontend, backend, APIs, databases, or internal tools, depending on the technology stack.
- Ability to identify technical risks, communicate tradeoffs, and propose practical solutions.
- Comfort working in a fast-moving, early-stage environment with evolving requirements and cross-functional collaboration.
Preferred Background
- Experience with healthcare, education technology, digital health, nonprofit technology, or mission-driven platforms.
- Experience building admin tools, permission systems, messaging/notification systems, or workflow automation.
- Experience improving test coverage, release readiness, CI/CD processes, or production reliability.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, a related field, or equivalent practical experience preferred but not required.
Key Competencies
- Systems Thinking
- Execution Discipline & Ownership
- Technical Judgment
- Quality & Reliability Mindset
- Clear Communication
- Mission Alignment
Success Metrics (First 6-12 Months)
