JOB DESCRIPTION
Supervises the daily operations relating to microbiology and molecular microbiology analytical testing to include assigning and monitoring work performance, evaluating program and work objectives and effectiveness an realigning work and staffing assignments as necessary. Serves as technical expert for all sections of the laboratory and coordinates biosafety operations and serves as an in-house compliance auditor.
Management Scope: Supervises approximately 25 exempt and non-exempt clinical staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Supervises the daily operations of the Serology, Bacteriology, Tuberculosis and Biodefense (LRN) Branches as well as the STAT Lab by coordinating work assignments and activities.
2. Aids in the development of new laboratory procedures in conjunction with the quality control manager. Develops, maintains and updates existing protocols and procedures as needed.
3. Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives and provides assistance to the planning and management of all laboratory services. Ensures compliance with state and federal regulators.
4. Completes staff performance evaluations and makes recommendations relating to recruitment, terminations and other personnel related actions.
5. Assists in the development and administration of the laboratory budget, including providing input on budget development, staff allocations, and recommendations.
6. Represents the department by making presentations, providing information and testimony, collaborating with customers and other state agencies and federal partners. Assist with technical supervisor duties when called upon.
7. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Experience and Training:
Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a related field of study. Four (4) years of work related experience in a clinical lab setting to include one (1) year supervisory experience.
Special Requirements/Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of standard software applications. Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments and the general public.
Physical/Environmental Requirements:
Work requires moderate exertion and the occasional lifting of 26-50 pounds.
