CAT6 / Fiber & Copper Technician (Installer / Helper)
Location: Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB), OH
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 0730–1600
Position Overview
We are seeking a Fiber Technician / Helper/Telephone Lineman to support installation and maintenance of communications infrastructure at WPAFB. This role supports the Fiber Optic and Cable Infrastructure Support (FOCIS V) program, which includes installation, upgrading, re-routing, terminating, testing, and removal of cable systems across base facilities .
The ideal candidate will assist with fiber and copper installations, ensure quality workmanship, follow strict safety and security requirements, and collaborate with project teams to deliver reliable network infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Cable Installation & Infrastructure
- Install, upgrade, re-route, terminate, test, and remove communications cabling (CAT6, fiber optic)
- Support both intra-building and inter-building cable plant work including duct systems and pathways
- Assist with installation of racks, cabinets, cable trays, and pathways
- Install wireless access points (WAPs) per engineering drawings
Fiber Optic Work
- Assist with splicing, terminating, and testing single-mode and multi-mode fiber
- Perform testing using:
- OTDR
- Power meters
- Light sources
- Ensure fiber performance meets manufacturer and project specifications
Copper Cabling (CAT6 and Above)
- Terminate and test structured cabling systems (CAT6/CAT6A)
- Perform continuity testing (shorts, grounds, reversals, split pairs)
- Label and document all cable runs per standards
Testing & Documentation
- Conduct pre- and post-installation testing on all cabling
- Record and submit test results and installation documentation
- Maintain accurate as-built drawings and labeling
Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Troubleshoot network cabling issues
- Perform repairs, reroutes, and system upgrades
- Support grounding, bonding, and network integrity checks
Site & Safety Compliance
- Conduct site surveys and identify installation constraints
- Follow OSHA, base safety requirements, and industry standards
- Work in confined spaces (manholes, handholes) using proper safety procedures
- Maintain tools and equipment (fusion splicers, cleavers, testers)
Team Collaboration
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, and government personnel
- Support multiple task orders and meet project deadlines
Required Qualifications
- Experience with CAT6/CAT6A cabling and/or fiber optic installation
- Basic understanding of structured cabling standards (TIA/EIA preferred)
- Ability to use cable testing equipment (or willingness to learn)
- Ability to read basic drawings and follow installation plans
- Physically able to lift, pull cable, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces
- Strong attention to detail and quality workmanship
- Valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with:
- Fiber splicing (fusion/mechanical)
- OTDR testing and certification
- Patch panels, MDF/IDF buildouts
- BICSI certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Prior experience on government or military installations
- Knowledge of grounding & bonding standards
Security Requirements
- Must be eligible to obtain a DoD SECRET clearance
- Work may occur in controlled or classified environments
- Must comply with all base access and security procedures
Work Environment
- Indoor and outdoor work across base facilities
- Exposure to construction environments, manholes, and cable pathways
- Use of PPE and adherence to strict safety protocols required

- Aligned with Service Contract Act (SCA) labor categories (e.g., Telecom Mechanic, Cable Splicer, Laborer)
