Position Summary
The Ophthalmic Technician and Scribe plays a dual role in assisting ophthalmologists with patient care by performing preliminary eye exams, diagnostic testing, and documenting findings in real time during the physician’s examination. This position requires strong clinical knowledge, excellent typing skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with precision and professionalism.
Key Responsibilities Clinical Duties (Technician Role):
- Obtain and document patient history, including chief complaint, ocular and systemic history, medications, and allergies.
- Perform visual acuity testing, pupil assessment, confrontation visual fields, extraocular motility, and color vision testing.
- Conduct diagnostic tests such as:
- Tonometry (applanation and/or non-contact)
- Pachymetry
- Visual field testing
- OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)
- Fundus photography
- A-Scan or IOL Master biometry
- Instill dilating and diagnostic eye drops as directed.
- Prepare and clean exam rooms and instruments before and after patient visits.
- Assist physician with minor in-office procedures and laser treatments.
- Educate patients on medication use, post-procedure care, and follow-up instructions.
Documentation Duties (Scribe Role):
- Accurately and efficiently document the physician’s findings, treatment plans, and patient instructions into the electronic health record (EHR) in real-time.
- Prepare and update EHR templates and forms as needed.
- Review and verify accuracy of medical documentation.
- Assist physician in navigating the EHR and locating test results, imaging, and other patient data.
- Ensure compliance with all HIPAA and documentation standards.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous ophthalmic or optometric experience preferred.
- Knowledge of ophthalmic terminology and testing procedures.
- Strong typing and computer skills.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a team environment and multitask effectively.
- Certification (preferred but not required): COA, COT, or OSC.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for long periods.
- Ability to assist with patient positioning and mobility.
- Manual dexterity to operate ophthalmic instruments.
- Vision adequate to perform job functions safely and accurately.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $18.50 - $20.00 per hour
