SquashBridge is a unique athletic, educational, and community center in Bridgeport, CT. Our 15,000 square foot facility has eight international squash courts (including one outdoor court), classrooms, a library, and offices. We offer an intensive youth development program and a community squash club for local players, families, and schools.
About the Position
The Summer Math Instructor is a seasonal, part-time, student-facing educator who provides engaging, age-appropriate math instruction and support during SquashBridge’s four-week summer program. This role will design and lead short math lessons and activities that help students maintain and strengthen foundational math skills, build confidence, and see math as useful, approachable, and fun.
The Summer Math Instructor will work with small groups of students (rising 4th-6th graders) and will collaborate with program staff to support a positive, structured, and inclusive summer learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
The Summer Math Instructor will:
- Plan and facilitate engaging math lessons and activities for small groups of students.
- Support students in building foundational math skills, including number sense, problem-solving, fluency, and mathematical reasoning.
- Differentiate instruction and activities to meet the needs of students with varying math abilities.
- Incorporate games, hands-on activities, real-world applications, and collaborative learning when appropriate.
- Create a positive, encouraging environment where students feel comfortable taking risks and making mistakes.
- Communicate with SquashBridge program staff about student participation, engagement, and areas of need.
- Prepare and organize materials needed for math instruction.
- Support program routines, expectations, and student supervision as needed.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree required. Graduate coursework or degree in math or elementary education is strongly preferred.
Experience
- Experience teaching, tutoring, or supporting students in math.
- Experience working with upper elementary and/or middle school students.
- Strong classroom management and group facilitation skills.
- Ability to make math engaging, accessible, and approachable.
- Commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming learning environment.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of foundational math skills and developmentally appropriate math instruction.
- Ability to build strong rapport with students while maintaining clear, consistent structure.
- Ability to differentiate instruction for students with varying levels of math confidence and skill.
- Strong organization skills and reliability; able to plan sessions, manage materials, and track student engagement and progress as needed.
Certifications & Requirements
- Successful background check and completion of mandated reporter training.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of supervising active elementary students and moving classroom materials.
Working Conditions
- Environment: Primarily on-site at SquashBridge (1691 Main Street, Bridgeport, CT).
- Hours: 20 hours per week for five weeks, including one week of planning and preparation and four weeks of summer programming. The Summer Program runs from July 20-August 14. The exact schedule will be determined with the Program Director, but candidates must be available from 9:00am-12:30pm, Monday-Thursday, during the program.
- Compensation: $40-$50/hour, commensurate with experience and training.
- Reporting Structure: Reports to the Program Director.
