Financial Controller / Financial Systems Manager
Missouri Basin Materials — Bismarck, ND
Full-Time
Missouri Basin Materials is looking for a Financial Controller / Financial Systems Manager to take ownership of our financial systems, accounting processes, billing oversight, payables, receivables, job-cost tracking, reporting, and internal controls.
This is not a basic bookkeeping role.
MBM is a construction material supplier and rebar fabrication company that has been operating for many years. Like a lot of growing businesses, many of our financial and operational systems were built piece by piece over time. Some systems work, some are outdated, and some need to be improved or rebuilt.
We are looking for someone who can step into a real operating business, understand the current process, identify weak points, clean up inefficiencies, and help build a more accurate, efficient, and trackable financial system.
The goal of this role is simple: give leadership clean, reliable, and timely financial data so the company can make better decisions faster.
Purpose of the Role
The purpose of this role is to create financial clarity across the company.
MBM needs someone who can take ownership of our financial systems and build a clear, accurate, and trackable reporting structure that shows how the business is actually performing. This includes job-cost tracking, margin reporting, billing oversight, payables, receivables, cash flow, inventory, labor, freight, overhead, and monthly financial performance.
A major responsibility of this position will be building a monthly financial package for leadership. This report should give a clear picture of company performance, job profitability, cash position, receivables, payables, margin trends, budget vs. actual, and any major financial or operational issues that need attention.
This role is not just about entering data or producing basic financial statements. The right person will be expected to review the numbers, identify gaps, catch mistakes, question inconsistencies, and point out where the company is losing money, missing information, lacking controls, or operating inefficiently.
We are also looking for someone who can think independently, improve systems, and build better processes without needing every step handed to them. MBM needs a person who can look at how things are currently being done, identify what is inefficient or unclear, and create practical systems that make the company more accurate, organized, and scalable.
The goal is for leadership to have accurate financial information that shows where the holes are, so we can make better decisions, fix problems faster, and continue building a stronger company.
Responsibilities
- Oversee customer billing processes to ensure invoices are accurate, timely, and properly supported
- Monitor accounts receivable and help ensure customer payments are tracked and collected on time
- Oversee accounts payable to ensure vendor bills are reviewed, coded correctly, approved, and paid according to terms
- Manage monthly close, reconciliations, and financial reporting
- Improve accounting structure, transaction coding, and financial tracking processes
- Clean up and improve QuickBooks processes, chart of accounts, coding structure, and reporting accuracy
- Build better systems for job-cost tracking, margin reporting, labor, freight, inventory, overhead, and project costs
- Build and maintain a monthly financial package for leadership that includes financial statements, cash position, AR/AP aging, job-cost reporting, margin trends, budget vs. actual, and key issues requiring attention
- Analyze financial data to identify margin leaks, billing delays, coding errors, cash-flow issues, job-costing gaps, and areas where the company lacks visibility or control
- Track cash flow timing between receivables, payables, payroll, inventory purchases, vendor payments, and major project costs
- Create monthly reports and dashboards that give leadership clear visibility into company performance
- Review financial activity for errors, inconsistencies, missed billings, incorrect coding, duplicate entries, or process breakdowns
- Create accountability systems so financial tasks are tracked, followed up on, and completed properly
- Maintain and improve financial controls to reduce mistakes, missed revenue, duplicate payments, and inaccurate reporting
- Independently identify outdated, inefficient, or unclear financial processes and build better systems to improve accuracy, accountability, and visibility
- Create practical workflows, reports, checklists, and controls that help financial information move through the company correctly and consistently
- Continuously improve financial systems as the company grows, rather than only maintaining the existing process
- Identify inefficiencies, data gaps, and weak points in current financial processes
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and budget-vs-actual reporting
- Work with ownership and leadership to connect financial data to sales, operations, production, purchasing, and job profitability
- Work with administrative staff to ensure day-to-day financial tasks are being executed correctly
- Help create scalable financial processes as the company continues to grow
Qualifications
- Experience in accounting, financial management, controlling, or financial operations
- Strong understanding of billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, cash flow, and financial reporting
- Experience with job costing, margin tracking, project accounting, or cost allocation preferred
- QuickBooks experience preferred
- Strong Excel skills required
- Experience in construction, manufacturing, fabrication, distribution, inventory, or job-cost-based businesses preferred
- Ability to improve systems, not just maintain them
- Ability to work independently and build practical processes without needing every step handed to them
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to identify errors, inconsistencies, and process breakdowns
- Ability to communicate financial information clearly to ownership and leadership
- High integrity, accountability, and problem-solving ability
Ideal Candidate
The right person for this role is not scared of messy or outdated systems. We need someone who can evaluate how things are currently being done, keep what works, fix what does not, and help build something better.
This person should be detail-oriented, but also practical. We do not need unnecessary corporate red tape. We need accurate numbers, clean reporting, better tracking, stronger accountability, and financial systems that help the business operate more efficiently.
This role is a good fit for someone who likes building systems, improving broken processes, catching mistakes, and turning financial data into useful information that helps a company make better decisions.
Compensation
Compensation will depend on experience and ability. We are willing to pay for the right person who can help build the financial foundation MBM needs for long-term growth.
