ASSIGNMENT OVERVIEW
As a PM Husbandry Tech Volunteer, you’ll work alongside our dedicated care staff to
help ensure everything runs smoothly and all important daily tasks get finished — from
cleaning island patios and preparing enrichment, to cleaning devices and toys,
managing laundry, filling hay bins, and maintaining essential spaces like bathrooms,
storage areas, and electrical rooms.
Afternoons are a critical time for our team. With your help handling these important
tasks, care staff are able to focus on specialized operant conditioning training sessions
with the chimps (which you may have the opportunity to observe!), complete detailed
ZIMS documentation, provide timely veterinary updates that directly support chimp
health and wellbeing, and focus individualized care during their dinner meal.
The PM shift differs from the AM shift in that it is generally less physically demanding
and offers a more relaxed pace. This shift is well-suited for volunteers with a range of
skill levels, providing valuable support that is essential to the chimpanzees’ daily care.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by
the volunteer to successfully perform the essential functions of this assignment:
- While performing the duties of this assignment, the volunteer is required to: stand
for long periods of time; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or
controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs, step stools, ladders; balance;
stoop, kneel, crouch; talk and hear.
- The volunteer must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and team lift in
excess of 25 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by the assignment include close vision, distance
vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust
focus.
- Able to drive and operate a golf cart for use on sanctuary property.
PUBLIC HEALTH REQUIREMENTS
- Save the Chimps currently requires all volunteers in this assignment to be
vaccinated for Influenza, Hepatitis A & B, Tetanus, MMR (Measles, Mumps,
Rubella) and to be tested annually for Tuberculous.
- Volunteers must be comfortable and compliant with sanctuary protocols including
working in proximity to both humans and chimpanzees, and wearing of PPE,
among other best practices in public health management.
