Job Overview
The Preconstruction Engineer – Electrical is responsible for supporting the planning, estimating, and design coordination of electrical systems for data center and commercial construction projects. This role involves detailed quantity takeoffs, cost estimation, constructability reviews, and coordination with design teams, subcontractors, and clients to ensure accurate and competitive project bids.
1. Estimating & Cost Analysis
- Perform detailed electrical quantity takeoffs (MV, LV, grounding, lighting, raceways, cable tray, etc.)
- Develop conceptual, ROM, and detailed estimates based on project stage (SD, DD, CD, IFC)
- Analyze drawings, specifications, and bid documents for scope completeness
- Prepare labor hour estimates using NECA/industry standards and historical data
- Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor quotations
2. Preconstruction Support
- Assist in preparation of bid proposals, clarifications, and scope narratives
- Participate in value engineering and cost optimization strategies
- Identify scope gaps, risks, and opportunities during bid phase
- Support budgeting for large-scale projects (data centers, commercial buildings)
3. Vendor Submittal and Technical Coordination
- Review vendor and subcontractor submittals for compliance with project specifications, drawings, and applicable codes/standards
- Coordinate with the engineering/design team to validate technical accuracy and ensure alignment with project requirements
- Consolidate and submit submittals to the client for review and approval
- Track submittal status and maintain proper documentation logs
- Address client review comments by coordinating revisions with vendors and engineering teams
- Ensure timely resubmission of corrected documents until final approval is achieve
4. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain estimate backups and documentation
- Prepare bid summaries, comparison sheets, and cost breakdowns
- Track historical cost data for benchmarking
- Support handoff to operations/project management teams
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
Experience:
- 2–5+ years of experience in electrical construction, estimating, or preconstruction
- Experience in data center or commercial building projects preferred
Technical Skills:
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems (MV/LV distribution, lighting, grounding)
- Proficiency in estimating software (Accubid, Bluebeam, PlanSwift, etc.)
- Familiarity with BIM tools (Revit/Navisworks) is a plus
- Understanding of NEC codes and industry standards
- Familiarity with BuildingConnected or similar bid platforms
Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour
