Position Objective: The Associate Judge is responsible for fairly and impartially hearing and deciding court cases that are filed within the Jurisdiction of the Spirit Lake Tribe pursuant to the Spirit Lake Tribe Constitution and Bylaws, the Spirit Lake Law and Order Code and all other applicable laws and ordinances. It is expected that the Associate Judge will dispose of cases in a timely, efficient and ethically responsible manner.
Major Duties & Responsibilities:
- All duties as set forth in Title 2 of the Spirit Law and Order Code.
- Evaluate and initiate the development or improvement of Juvenile Court operations and policies.
- The Associate Judge shall primarily preside over Juvenile/Family Court matters. However, it will be expected that the Associate Judge have the knowledge and capability to preside over all types of Court matters as necessary and as assigned by the Chief Judge.
- Must call and preside over all scheduled hearings.
- Must prepare and issue all necessary written orders, findings of fact, conclusions of law, judgment orders, and opinions in a timely manner.
- Must be available after normal working hours to address emergency situations, issue warrants and bonds.
- Must be available to meet with the Tribal Council when necessary and appropriate.
Qualifications, Experience and Education Required:
- Must be at least 25 years of age or older.
- It is preferred that the Applicant have a Juris Doctorate Degree and/or be a licensed attorney. However, at a minimum, the Applicant should possess an Associate's Degree from an accredited institution or higher learning and at least have three or more years of judicial experience working in or for a tribal justice system.
- Must demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of legal practices, procedures and standards.
- Must demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of legal issues specific to tribal communities.
- Must be able to respect and where appropriate incorporate tribal custom and tradition in the dispute resolution process.
- Must demonstrate strong legal research and writing skills.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony offense or tribal offense that is subject to 60 days or more of imprisonment.
- Must be of high moral character and integrity.
Pay: $31.55 - $47.72 per hour
