Position Summary
We are seeking a creative and organized Elementary Art Teacher for the 2026-2027 school year. Teachers in this role introduce students in grades K-5 to a wide range of artistic techniques, materials, and traditions while building foundational skills in observation, craftsmanship, and creative problem-solving.
The ideal candidate balances imaginative, hands-on projects with clear studio routines and expectations, creating a classroom where students feel free to take creative risks within a structured environment.

Key Responsibilities
- Deliver standards-aligned visual arts instruction to students in grades K-5
- Teach the elements of art and principles of design through developmentally appropriate projects in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and mixed media
- Introduce students to art history, cultural traditions, and diverse artistic perspectives
- Establish and maintain clear studio procedures for the safe and responsible use of art materials and tools
- Manage the art room, including inventory, ordering supplies within budget, and maintaining organized storage of student work and materials
- Curate and display student artwork throughout the school and coordinate an annual student art show
- Support school-wide events, spirit weeks, and cross-curricular projects with visual arts contributions
- Communicate consistently with families about student progress and classroom expectations
- Implement accommodations and modifications for students with IEPs and 504 plans
- Participate in coaching cycles, team collaboration, and school-wide professional development
- Maintain accurate records for grading and attendance
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of elementary visual arts curriculum, Michigan Arts Standards, and developmentally appropriate techniques for grades K-5
- Proficiency across a range of media, including drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics or clay alternatives, and mixed media
- Ability to plan sequential units that build technical skill and creative expression over time
- Strong classroom management rooted in consistency, fairness, and clear studio routines
- Ability to build positive relationships while maintaining high expectations for craftsmanship and effort
- Strong organizational skills, including materials management and budget awareness
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Art Education or related field
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with Visual Arts (AS) endorsement required
- Two or more years of teaching experience preferred
- Demonstrated classroom management and instructional effectiveness in an elementary setting
Candidates must hold valid Michigan certification prior to the start of the 2026-2027 school year.
