Painting is a key specialty within the Facilities Maintenance Department. Under general supervision, these employees apply paint, varnish, stain, enamel, and lacquer to protect and enhance interior and exterior building surfaces. They may occasionally work in environments that are dusty, wet, noisy, or otherwise hazardous. This position is designated as essential, and employees may be required to work during university closures related to emergencies or natural disasters. Painters work under the direct supervision of the Building Trades Supervisor within the Facilities Maintenance Department.

Key Competencies:

Demonstrated knowledge of protective coating principles and commercial/construction painting methods.

Solid working knowledge of Microsoft office, email platforms, and familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems.

Physical Requirements:

Tasks involve regular—and occasionally sustained—performance of moderately physically demanding work. Duties may include climbing and balancing (such as ascending and descending ladders), stooping, kneeling, crawling, working at heights, and operating in confined spaces. The role may require lifting moderately heavy objects up to 45 pounds. A full range of physical motion is necessary to safely operate manual and electrically powered tools.
Job Conditions: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, including dirt, dust, pollen, odors, moisture, extreme temperatures, humidity, fumes, noise, hazardous materials, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, and toxic agents.
