Isle of Wight County Department of Public Works is recruiting for a Maintenance Worker II. The Maintenance Worker II maintains County buildings, structures, fixtures, and equipment and is responsible for electrical, mechanical, and plumbing maintenance and repair. Additionally, the incumbent also performs carpentry work and painting to support in-house construction needs.
- Inspects and monitors the condition of County buildings, structures, and fixtures in order to initiate necessary maintenance and/or repairs.

Responds to work orders and requests for repairs, reports of leaks, unusual odors/sounds, and/or operating malfunctions or building mechanical and/or electrical systems.

Repairs plumbing fixtures and systems and replaces light bulbs and filters as needed.

Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on a variety of mechanical and electrical systems within County buildings.

Performs indoor maintenance to include painting, carpentry, electrical or mechanical repairs, and furniture or fixture moving and/or repair.

Performs outdoor maintenance to include concrete work, painting, and structural repairs.

Assists with the logistics of special events that may require occasional overtime and/or weekend work hours.

Exercises purchasing authority up to $5,000 without approval from supervisor.

Observes all approved safety and health policies and procedures pertaining to his/her work activities and performs all work tasks in a safe and healthy manner in accordance with County policy.

Performs other assigned duties.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Very heavy work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires the use of fingers, balancing, climbing, crouching, grasping, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

High School Diploma or equivalent;

One (1) year of related work experience;

Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

Driver's License valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of proper cleaning and maintenance methods and procedures;

Knowledge of fundamentals of HVAC, carpentry, and electricity;

Knowledge of county ordinances, policies, and procedures;

Skill in interpersonal relations;

Skill in verbal and written communication;

Ability to repair heavy or complex machinery, such as HVAC systems, construction equipment, or water plants;

Ability to use or repair small/light equipment, such as power tools;

Ability to use or repair medium equipment and machinery, such as vehicles; and

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate effectively with other employees and the general public.

While some will perform their regular duties, others may be assigned to report at a different time and location and to perform different duties from their regular jobs. Employees will either be deemed essential personnel and provide services that must continue regardless of or pursuant to a state of emergency or will be deemed nonessential personnel that will be required to report to work in an emergency if they receive an assignment to shelter duty or other duty.
