THIS POSITION IS AT-WILL EMPLOYMENT.THIS RECRUITMENT WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL FILLED.A MEDICAL EXAMINATION AND DRUG SCREENING WILL BE REQUIRED FOLLOWING A CONDITIONAL JOB OFFER OF EMPLOYMENT.DEFINITIONUnder direct supervision, learns and performs semi-skilled work in support of all District collection system installation, inspection, preventive, and corrective maintenance and repair activities; assists in performing underground televised wastewater line inspection and hydrocleaning of lines; assists in inspecting and performing preventive maintenance, servicing, and mechanical repair of stationary pumping station and mobile equipment; and performs related work as required.SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDReceives direct supervision and training from the Wastewater Maintenance Supervisor and/or Wastewater Maintenance Manager and functional and technical direction from the Wastewater Maintenance Worker II, III, or Wastewater Maintenance Lead Worker. Exercises no direct supervision of staff.CLASS CHARACTERISTICSThe Wastewater Maintenance Worker I is the entry-level class in the maintenance worker series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents with basic maintenance experience learn District infrastructure, systems, and facilities, use of tools and equipment, and assist and participate in all District activities required to install, inspect, maintain, and repair collections system facilities and equipment, including main sewer lines, laterals, pumping stations, and mobile equipment. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is often used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience. Assignments may vary with the skill and training of the incumbent; however, all employees are cross-trained in all assignments and the use of all equipment. This class is distinguished from Wastewater Maintenance Worker II in that the latter independently performs the full range of skilled work in all areas of collection system maintenance and repair. Positions at the II level are normally filled by advancement from the I level requiring one (1) additional year of experience and after gaining the knowledge, skill, experience, licenses, and certifications which meet the qualifications for, and after demonstrating the ability to perform the work of the higher-level class. When filled from the outside, two (2) years of prior related experience are required that allows the person to meet the qualification standards for the II level.

Learns to perform inspection, construction, maintenance, and repair activities of District infrastructure.Learns to operate specialized vehicles and a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment related to the maintenance and repair of the District’s sanitation infrastructure system.Learns to operate hydrocleaning and rodding equipment to clean and flush sewer lines on a scheduled or emergency basis.Learns to inspect pumping stations on a scheduled basis; reads and records flow meters and gauges; learns to perform servicing and repair of pumps, motors, valves, and other mechanical and electrical equipment, including pulling and de-ragging pumps; responds to power outages and installs generators and bypass pumps, as necessary.Learns to check and interpret the District’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Geographic Information (GIS) systems.Assists in responding to customer complaints or problems and uses inspection equipment to identify causes and facilitate repair.Learns to inspect underground sewer pipes, lateral connections, and associated appurtenances using closed-circuit television equipment to locate leaks, breaks, infiltration and the buildup of dirt, debris, roots and other materials on a scheduled preventive maintenance basis.Learns to set up traffic control and safety equipment when using vehicles on a street or other roadway; uses safety equipment and observes all safety procedures as specified by the District.Notifies supervisor of the need for repair or additional maintenance as found during routine inspection and cleaning activities; prepares work orders or notes service requirements.Operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to work assignment as instructed.Services and maintains mobile equipment in a clean and orderly condition; makes minor repairs as needed; learns to service and repair specialty hydrocleaning and television inspection equipment.Contacts the public to inform them of activities and shutdowns; explains applicable rules and regulations.Assists in responding to emergency calls for service; assists in mitigating overflow spills and damage as required.Maintains public facilities, shop and garage areas, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the workday.Enters data into an automated work order tracking system; maintains accurate records of work performed.Learns and performs confined space entry, as necessary.Performs after-hours emergency work and on-call duties as assigned.Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
PHYSICAL DEMANDSMust possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, to climb and descend ladders, to operate varied hand and power tools and construction equipment, and to operate a motor vehicle and visit various District sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 75 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTSEmployees work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives and contractors in interpreting and enforcing District policies and procedures.WORKING CONDITIONSMay be required to be on-call and to work various shifts or emergencies on evenings, weekends, and holidays.
