Job Summary
At Main Street United Methodist Church, we are committed to building relationships and serving God and others as we live out an active faith. We are located in the heart of historic Boonville, on the corner of 5th and Main Street. Boonville has a population of 8,000 people with an average weekly attendance at church of 90. The choir consists of 15 members.
The Music Director develops and leads the worship ministry for Main Street UMC, in consultation with the Pastor, Assistant Director, and Organist. The goal is to nurture a strong music program that leads our congregation into growing relationships with Go and through worship and fellowship. Basic knowledge of social media and tech system equipment.
Responsible To: Lead Pastor and Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC), and is subject to annual evaluations.
Description of Duties
- Provide leadership and oversight for the ministries and programs of the choirs that lead worship for the Sunday morning worship services (September-May), and for midweek and special services as required, and arrange for special music during the summer. Choir practices begin in August.
- Coordinate with the pastor and music staff to provide meaningful worship that is timely and in coordination with the seasons of liturgical calendar.
- Choose music for the Chancel Choir that will strengthen the worship service.
- Recruit, train, and rehearse members of the choir and/or music team.
- Manage and maintain the church music library.
- Oversee the proper care of choir robes and stoles.
- Cantata: Oversee and direct one Cantata presentation associated with the observance of Christmas, lead weekly rehearsals for the Cantata in preparation for the annual presentation, enlist additional instrumentalists for the accompaniment of the Cantata presentation as needed, and promote the Cantata presentation in the congregation and to the community.
- Facilitate the Music Team and Worship Team to set goals and help develop new musical opportunities.
- Seek to develop ways to reach people outside our congregation through existing or new musical ministries.
- Lead congregation in singing of hymns.
- Communicate program and schedule information to the congregation, staff, and participants.
- Communicate faithfully with the Pastor.
- Develop annual budget requests for all music programs.
- Perform other essential related duties as may be required.
- Committee Memberships and Commitments: Worship Team, Music Team, and Tech Team.
- Supervision and Accountability – Accountability is to the Pastor of Main Street UMC as immediate supervisor. Annual review of performance and appraisal of any appeals will be by the SPRC. Must be willing to attend Child Protection Training and submit to a background check at no charge.
Qualifications
- Committed Christian and follower of Jesus Christ.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Music preferred.
- Five years of related experience preferred.
- Good communication and organizational skills.
- Strong team player with the staff, music team, and congregation.
- Demonstrated ability in a wide range of styles including Christian classic hymns and contemporary music.
Hours and Compensation:
- Sunday mornings: 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. (3 hours per week)
- Mid-week rehearsals: (1-3 hours per week)
- Planning and preparation time: (3-6 hours per week)
- Special services and planning meetings: (5-10 hours per month or as needed)
- This is a salaried position and is reviewed annually by the SPRC.
