American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Med/Surg Tele position at a Level 1 Trauma teaching hospital, requiring at least 2 years of Med/Tele experience and a GA or compact RN license.

23-bed Med/Surg Tele unit in a 637-licensed-bed Level 1 Trauma teaching hospital with Chest Pain and Stroke Center designations

Patient population includes post-op orthopedic (hip, knee, shoulder replacement), bariatric, and spinal surgery patients, as well as patients with acute/chronic conditions and common med-surg co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, CHF, and electrolyte imbalances
-
Patients may require cardiac drips (non-titratable), insulin drips, chest tubes, wound vacs, trachs, and PCA pumps
-
RN-to-patient ratio of 1:4–6; supported by LPNs and 2–3 CNAs per shift
-
12-hour night shifts, 7p–7a, 36 hours per week
-
Weekend rotation of 6 shifts over a 6-week schedule cycle

No on-call requirements

Floating required to all adult Med/Surg and Telemetry units in the facility

EMR: Epic (experience required); IV pumps: Alaris; medication dispensing: Pyxis; monitors: Philips

Unit equipment includes Glucommander, PCA pumps, bladder scanners, external fixators, chest tubes, JP drains, Hemovac drains, VS3 vital sign monitors, and portable oxygen systems

Central Telemetry Unit provides remote telemetry monitoring support

Active GA or compact RN license required

BLS required; ACLS preferred

Basic Cardiac Rhythm (BCR) interpretation competency — candidates must pass an EKG competency exam as part of compliance onboarding

Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg Tele RN experience, with most recent experience within the last year
-
Strong clinical assessment skills appropriate for a Level 1 Trauma hospital setting
-
Proficiency with trach care, chest tube management, PIV starts, Glucommander, insulin drips, heparin drips, and cardiac/telemetry monitoring
-
Experience with IV insertion, central line management, wound care, and post-op monitoring

Epic EMR experience required

Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration

Minimum 1 professional reference dated within the past year, from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
-
Responsibilities include coordinating care with interdisciplinary teams, discharge planning, and patient education with an emphasis on renal and fluid management
-
Unit support includes CNAs, a unit secretary (on-site 7a–11p, house-wide after hours), charge nurse, PICC team, discharge nurses, resource float team, central telemetry unit, and 24/7 respiratory therapy, hospitalist, and intensivist coverage

Nurses are responsible for drawing labs from central venous lines; most units use lab-collect phlebotomy otherwise

Orientation consists of 1 day of facility orientation with educational modules, followed by 2 days of departmental orientation

Holiday coverage is required — travelers are expected to work 75% of holidays; holidays include Thanksgiving Day or day after, 12/24 or 12/25, and 12/31 or 1/1
