Tell the Stories Behind the Mission
At the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, every animal has a story.
Some stories begin with hardship. Others begin with hope. Many end with a family finding their new best friend. Along the way, there are countless moments worth sharing, moments that inspire adoptions, encourage donations, recruit volunteers, and connect our community to the work we do every day.
We're looking for a talented Storyteller & Content Editor to help bring those stories to life. This is a role for someone who loves writing, notices the details others miss, and understands how a great story can make people stop scrolling, open an email, make a donation, or fall in love with an adoptable pet. You'll spend your days gathering stories from across the organization, interviewing staff, photographing animals, capturing video, writing content, editing copy, and helping ensure the ARL's voice remains authentic and engaging across every platform.
If you're equally excited by a well-written newsletter article, a compelling social media post, and a photo that perfectly captures an animal's personality, this could be the role for you.
You know how to tell a story and tell it well. You're a strong writer and editor who can adapt your voice for different audiences while maintaining accuracy, clarity, and consistency.
You enjoy talking with people, asking questions, and uncovering the moments that make a story worth sharing. You're comfortable collaborating with staff across departments and can take information from multiple sources and turn it into engaging content.
You have at least two years of professional writing and editing experience and ideally some experience with photography, videography, or digital content creation. Whether your background comes from communications, journalism, marketing, nonprofit work, or content creation, you understand how compelling storytelling can inspire action.
Most importantly, you're creative, curious, organized, and able to manage multiple projects without losing sight of the details.
The stories you'll tell aren't fictional. They're happening every day.
They're the stories of neglected animals receiving lifesaving care, families finding their perfect companion, volunteers giving their time, and supporters making our work possible.
As Iowa's largest nonprofit animal welfare organization, the ARL impacts thousands of animals every year. Through your writing, photography, videography, and creativity, you'll help ensure those stories are shared in ways that inspire people to become part of our mission.
This is an opportunity to combine creativity with purpose and use your talents to make a meaningful difference for animals and the people who love them.
This position requires frequent sitting and computer work, along with occasional standing, walking, photography, videography, and event support activities. Candidates must be able to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
Work may occasionally occur outdoors in varying weather conditions and may involve limited exposure to animals, animal dander, animal waste, moderate noise levels, contagious animal diseases, and the possibility of animal bites or scratches.
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is an Equal Opportunity Employer. In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and applicable state regulations, the ARL provides reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities and encourages applicants to discuss accommodation needs during the hiring process.
