About Inside Out Tours
Inside Out Tours is an award-winning tour operator and destination management company specializing in immersive cultural heritage experiences in New York City and beyond. Our tours explore history, culture, architecture, social justice, and the untold stories that shaped America.
We are currently seeking engaging, knowledgeable, and professional licensed African American tour guides to lead African American history and heritage tours throughout New York City, including neighborhoods and landmarks connected to slavery, abolition, the Underground Railroad, civil rights, Black excellence, arts, culture, and community resilience.
Position Overview
The African American History Tour Guide will lead educational walking tours, bus tours, private group experiences, school programs, and corporate/ERG tours. The ideal candidate is a strong storyteller who can present complex history in a clear, engaging, respectful, and thought-provoking way for diverse audiences.
- Lead high-quality guided tours focused on African American history, culture, and heritage in New York City.
- Share accurate, well-researched historical information in an engaging and accessible way.
- Create a welcoming and inclusive experience for guests of all backgrounds.
- Manage group movement, timing, safety, and guest engagement during tours.
- Adapt tour content for different audiences, including students, corporate groups, families, and international visitors.
- Answer guest questions professionally and thoughtfully.
- Represent Inside Out Tours with warmth, professionalism, and reliability.
- Communicate with the operations team regarding tour logistics, guest needs, timing, and any issues that arise.
Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of African American history, New York City history, cultural heritage, social justice, or related fields.
- Excellent public speaking and storytelling skills.
- Comfortable leading groups outdoors in different weather conditions.
- Professional, punctual, reliable, and organized.
- Ability to engage diverse audiences, including school groups, corporate teams, and private clients.
- Comfortable walking and standing for extended periods.
- Prior experience as a tour guide, educator, museum docent, actor, historian, performer, or public speaker is strongly preferred.
- NYC sightseeing guide license preferred
- Foreign language skills are a plus but not required.
Preferred Backgrounds
We welcome applicants with experience in history, education, museum studies, African American studies, public history, theater, tourism, cultural programming, social justice education, or community-based storytelling.
Schedule
This is a part-time, freelance/contract position. Tour assignments vary based on client bookings and guide availability. Weekend and weekday availability is helpful.

Pay: $50.00 - $55.00 per hour
