Position Summary:The Shift Lead serves as a working leader during assigned shifts and helps create a warm, welcoming environment for guests of the Coffee Shop at the El Paso Military Resiliency Center (EPMRC). In addition to preparing and serving quality coffee and beverages, the Shift Lead helps guide daily operations, supports baristas, and assists the General Manager in maintaining consistent service, cleanliness, accountability, and readiness. This role reflects the mission and values of The Warrior’s Journey (TWJ), honoring those who serve by meeting them where they are and walking with them through life’s challenges.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead assigned shifts by setting priorities, supporting baristas, monitoring workflow, and helping ensure consistent customer service and product quality.
- Serve as the primary point of contact during assigned shifts when the General Manager is not present and communicate operational concerns promptly.
- Train, coach, and assist team members with beverage preparation, customer service, food safety, cleaning, and operating procedures.
- Count cash drawers, prepare deposits or cash reports, document discrepancies, and follow established cash-handling and point-of-sale procedures.
- Monitor inventory levels, receive and organize deliveries, rotate stock, complete inventory counts, and notify the General Manager of ordering needs, shortages, waste, or damaged products.
- Assist the General Manager with daily operations, staff coordination, special events, reporting, and other administrative or operational duties as assigned.
- Help address customer concerns and team issues during the shift, escalating significant matters to the General Manager when needed.
- Provide outstanding, friendly service to every guest, creating a sense of belonging and respect.
- Prepare and serve espresso drinks, brewed coffee, teas, and specialty beverages to established standards.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and inviting environment throughout the coffee shop.
- Restock and rotate supplies to ensure readiness for daily operations.
- Share information about TWJ and other available resources when appropriate.
- Willing to lead prayer huddle throughout the day.
- Support a positive, team-oriented atmosphere that promotes cooperation, encouragement, and hospitality.
- Follow all food safety, sanitation, and cleanliness standards.
- Handle customer inquiries or concerns with professionalism, empathy, and care.
- Perform and oversee opening and closing procedures as assigned, including securing the shop, preparing equipment, completing required checklists, and ensuring the facility is ready for the next shift.
Qualifications:
· Must be a strong believer in God and adhere to TWJ’s Statement of Faith.
- Previous barista, food service, retail, or customer service experience required; prior leadership or shift-supervision experience preferred.
- Food Manager Certification (or ability to be certified) strongly desired.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Compassionate, dependable, and mission-minded.
- Ability to lead by example, prioritize tasks, solve problems, and remain calm in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Willingness and dependability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and assigned opening or closing shifts.
- Strong basic math, cash-handling, and point-of-sale (POS) system skills, with close attention to accuracy and accountability.
- Passion for coffee, hospitality, and serving the military and veteran community.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 25 pounds.
- Comfortable working with coffee machines, grinders, and related equipment.
Pay: $14.00 - $16.00 per hour
