The Department of Surgery is the 3rd largest department within Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM). We are committed to the education and development of excellent surgical clinicians by incorporating the skills, knowledge, and competencies essential for providing a high standard of care to residents across the state of Indiana and beyond. Faculty educators in the Department of Surgery strive to advance surgical scientists, and their research, and aim to instill the leadership qualities that will empower graduates to excel in all practice settings. Administration team members work across multiple specialties in the department including, Plastic Surgery, Trauma Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Breast Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, General Surgery, Transplant Surgery, Surgical Oncology, and Cardiovascular/Cardiothoracic Surgery.
Job Summary
Seeking an Associate Vice Chair to join our team to guide and partner with leadership regarding finance, department clinical operations, and research administration. This includes but is not limited to budgetary management and operational oversight for the Department of Surgery's teams of financial services, research administration, and IU Health Medical Group (IUHMG) clinical operations. Note this position will supervise both IU and IUHMG employees.
Department-Specific Responsibilities

Plan, direct and coordinate the activities of the staff, the department and its divisions, to include budget development, physician compensation modeling, resource management and allocation.
- Consults with and advise the Department Chair and Vice Chair of Clinical and Academic Administration on matters relating to the financial position, research affairs, and clinical operations of the department. The finance oversight includes both IU and IUHMG accounts/cost centers.

Oversees research administration efforts including pre-award, post-award, clinical research, and other operations, as assigned. Provides leadership to the Director of Research Administration and ensures an environment of support and growth for faculty investigators in the department. Ensure compliance with university guidelines, funding agencies, and regulatory entities. As needed, assist with and represent the department in audit situations that arise from contract and grant awards.

Provides leadership in both strategic and operational planning of division clinical services and operations. Ensures the department produces the necessary outcomes to support patient services. Leads the development of recommendations and practices that impact both clinical operations and corporate services and is accountable for operational/administrative outcomes including clinical, service, and human resources. Directs and plans for the achievement if service standards patient satisfaction, and provider productivity at all physician practice locations.

Collaborates with organizational leaders, both within the IUSM and IUHMG, with a focus on strategic planning, leadership, culture, and financial excellence.
General Responsibilities
-
Directs the daily and long-term financial and/or administrative operations of multiple institution organizational units or a multi-faceted academic research and teaching unit within a school or college.

Responsible for accuracy, timelines, and the general integrity of the Health Services Administration family.

Controls all expenditures and statement of accounts to ensure regulatory compliance and fiscal integrity.

Manages complex revenues including internal and external sources.

Directs the management of general appropriation, endowment, federal and non-federal grants and contracts, and gift funds.

Prepares operating and project budget drafts. Creates annual revenue and expenditure budget for school or support unit.

Monitors functional area budgets and reports any significant deviations from approved budgets. Develops budgetary policies and procedures.

Responsible for supervising business support personnel.

Develops, plans, and directs special projects, which may include space renovations, space allocations, staffing, equipment purchases, long-range plans, leasing of off-campus space and services.

May oversee and direct variety of human resources activities including employment, labor relations, benefits, training, and classification for functional area.

EDUCATION
Required

Bachelor's degree in health services, finance, business, or related field.
Preferred
-
Master's degree (MBA, MHA, and/or MS).
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required

4 years of related functional experience.

1 year of management experience.
Preferred

5 years of experience.

Experience in academic and/or healthcare medical/surgical finance setting.

Experience with physician compensation design is also needed to be fully successful in this position.

Ability to understand and interpret financial policies, regulations, and pertinent state/federal laws.

Advanced knowledge of financial statements and different budgetary models; ability to apply in different situations.

Knowledge of human resources laws and procedures as related to managing staff; Knowledge and understanding of the importance of mentors and mentorships.

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule (mix between remote and in-person work), subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs.
