Shige’s Premier Fleet Solutions is seeking an experienced Public Safety Upfitting Sales Specialist to develop and manage sales of vehicle upfitting solutions for law enforcement, fire, EMS, municipal, government, and commercial fleet customers.
This is a technical sales position, not an entry-level sales role. The ideal candidate will already have hands-on industry knowledge of public safety and emergency vehicle equipment and understand how complete vehicle upfits are designed, specified, quoted, installed, and delivered.
We are looking for someone who can speak confidently with police fleet managers, vehicle coordinators, command staff, public works departments, purchasing departments, and other fleet professionals and help them develop complete vehicle solutions based on their operational requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop new business with police departments, fire departments, EMS agencies, municipalities, government agencies, and commercial fleets.
- Maintain and expand relationships with existing public safety and fleet customers.
- Meet with customers to determine vehicle mission, equipment requirements, budgets, and specifications.
- Design and quote complete vehicle upfitting packages.
- Prepare professional estimates, proposals, equipment lists, and bid specifications.
- Assist customers with selecting appropriate equipment and configurations.
- Coordinate sales projects with technicians, installers, vendors, management, and fleet personnel.
- Review vehicle specifications and upfit requirements before projects enter production.
- Follow projects from initial customer consultation through final vehicle delivery.
- Identify opportunities for fleet standardization and repeat vehicle builds.
- Develop standardized upfit packages for frequently used police, fire, municipal, and fleet vehicles.
- Maintain accurate records of customer contacts, quotes, open opportunities, projects, and follow-up activities.
- Develop relationships with equipment manufacturers, distributors, vehicle dealers, fleet managers, and government purchasing personnel.
- Participate in product demonstrations, agency meetings, industry events, trade shows, and customer presentations.
- Stay current on new public safety vehicle technology, equipment, vehicle platforms, and installation requirements.
Required Technical Knowledge
Candidates should already have strong working knowledge of public safety vehicle systems, including:
- Emergency warning lighting systems
- Lightbars, interior lighting, grille lights, surface-mount lighting, and scene lighting
- Sirens, speakers, and warning controllers
- Police and public safety radio systems
- Antennas and communication equipment
- Mobile data computers and docking systems
- Equipment consoles and control systems
- Vehicle electrical systems and power distribution
- Relays, fuses, circuit protection, timers, and power management
- Auxiliary and dual-battery systems
- Camera and video systems
- In-car and body-camera related vehicle equipment
- ALPR and other vehicle-mounted technology
- Prisoner partitions, seating, window barriers, and transport equipment
- Push bumpers and exterior vehicle equipment
- Gun racks and secure equipment-storage systems
- Vehicle GPS and telematics systems
- Fleet tracking and connected-vehicle equipment
- Public safety networking and communications equipment
- Vehicle graphics, identification, and reflective markings
- Equipment mounting and vehicle-specific installation considerations
Candidates should understand how these systems interact within the vehicle and be capable of discussing equipment placement, electrical requirements, functionality, compatibility, and practical installation considerations with both customers and technicians.
Experience Requirements
Prior experience in the emergency vehicle, public safety, fleet upfitting, or closely related industry is strongly preferred.
Ideal candidates may have previous experience with:
- Emergency vehicle upfitters
- Police or municipal fleet operations
- Public safety equipment manufacturers or distributors
- Emergency lighting and siren manufacturers
- Two-way radio or public safety communications companies
- Fleet technology companies
- Vehicle equipment installation companies
- Government or municipal fleet sales
Candidates must possess enough technical knowledge to independently discuss public safety vehicle configurations with experienced fleet professionals.
We are specifically seeking someone who already understands this industry. This position is not intended for a general automotive salesperson who requires basic training on emergency vehicle equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Existing relationships within Southern California law enforcement, municipal, fire, EMS, or government fleet organizations
- Experience developing complete police vehicle upfit specifications
- Experience reading municipal RFQs, RFPs, and bid specifications
- Experience preparing government or fleet proposals
- Familiarity with common police vehicle platforms, including Ford Police Interceptor Utility, Chevrolet Tahoe PPV, Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-Series, and similar fleet vehicles
- Knowledge of major public safety equipment manufacturers and product lines
- Strong understanding of 12V automotive electrical systems
- Ability to read wiring diagrams and equipment installation documentation
- Experience working directly with vehicle upfit technicians and installers
- Strong computer, estimating, CRM, and organizational skills
What Success Looks Like
The successful Public Safety Upfitting Sales Specialist will become the primary point of contact between our customers and our upfitting operation.
This person should be able to meet with an agency, understand what they need their vehicles to accomplish, recommend the appropriate equipment, develop a complete upfit specification, produce an accurate proposal, and work with our production team to ensure the finished vehicle meets the customer’s expectations.
The objective is not simply to sell individual products. The objective is to build long-term fleet relationships and provide complete public safety vehicle solutions.
Ideal Candidate
You may be a strong fit for this position if you have worked for an emergency vehicle upfitter, public safety equipment manufacturer, radio/communications company, police fleet operation, or similar organization and already understand how emergency vehicles are equipped.
We are particularly interested in candidates who can bring both technical knowledge and sales ability to the position.
The right candidate should be comfortable walking into a police department or municipal fleet operation, speaking directly with experienced fleet personnel, reviewing an existing vehicle, discussing what works and what doesn’t, and developing a better solution for the next vehicle build.
