The Mosholu Montefiore Community Center (MMCC) is a vital community resource that changes the course of lives of Bronx and Manhattan residents to a degree not otherwise possible. Each year, we serve more than 40,000 preschoolers, school age children, teens, adults and senior citizens through our support, enrichment, education, and recreation programs, expanding their opportunities to live full, productive lives.
Position Summary:
MMCC’s College Bound & School Partnership for Academic and Recreational Collaboration program (SPARC) focuses on meeting the student’s holistic needs (mental health, social services, etc.) and remove barriers for the student to thrive in school and the community. The SPARC program models the Community School strategy, to form a partnership between the school faculty, youth and families, and the community to raise student achievement. The College Bound program is designed to provide all students interested in attending college with access to the necessary information to make well-educated decisions. The program provides students with one-on-one guidance to explore and navigate their post-secondary education journey whether it is applying to college, trade school, military or figuring out what is the next step and how to get there. This dual role will incorporate being a community liaison and a college counselor for the assigned partner school.
The SPARC College Bound Counselor will provide post-secondary education advice to students and families and carefully track student outcomes using the College Bound online student tracker tool to meet performance metrics and goals. They will also be responsible for attending on-going in-service training, team meetings, and may be asked to work on other projects specific to the partnership with the assigned school. The SPARC counselor will report to the program director at College Bound & designated faculty at the school site.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain a relationship with principals, assistant principals, school counselors, and teachers in assigned partner schools.
- Conduct Needs Assessments to provide optimal referral services to families and students.
- Act as a liaison for any potential programs interested in collaborating with the school and help to broker new partnerships that aligned with the school goals and needs.
- Facilitate cross-referral of students and families between MMCC and other service providers.
- Collect and monitor program implementation data and student data for each initiative and partnership.
- Plan and execute school-wide events for seniors, e.g. Career Day and College Decision Day.
- Attend and co-facilitate regular Parent meetings, School Leadership Team (SLT) ensuring the participation of diverse stakeholders.
- Facilitate college readiness workshops in a classroom setting for 12th grade students and/or families multiple times throughout the school year.
- Coordinate individual and group sessions with students to discuss college choices and admission process, post-secondary education and work readiness plans.
- Educate and advise students and families throughout the college admission process, financial aid, etc. to make well-rounded decisions. **May work with all high school grades**.
- Facilitate college presentations in a classroom setting for 11th grade students on college and career exploration.
- Identify and establish relationships with ASAP, BON, EOP, HEOP, SEEK, and other various programs on their college campus.
- Promote college awareness and accessibility.
- Provide students with additional post-secondary education, i.e. workforce program and vocational schools.
- Coordinate college field trips relevant to the student population as needed.
- Perform additional office and program duties as requested by the department.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Program Director.
- Maintain flexible hours and workdays.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree required in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Communications, or related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of college counseling experience is preferred.
- Knowledge of the College /FAFSA, Common Application, and University admissions process.
- Knowledge of ASAP, BON, EOP, HEOP, and SEEK programs.
- Bilingual in Spanish, preferred.
