Overview
The Southwestern Center for Independent Living (SWCIL), a community-based, non-profit is currently accepting resumes for a full-time Independent Living Specialist working in Cottonwood, Nobles, Rock, Redwood, Pipestone and Jackson counties of Southwest Minnesota. SWCIL is an independent living resource center that works to promote societal acceptance, inclusion, and equal access for all person’s with disabilities. Primary job functions include: providing IL skills, advocacy assistance, career consultation, and peer counseling services to youth in schools and adults in the community. Remote officing options but MUST reside in SW MN and travel to provide services within local communities.
Responsibilities
- Provide Independent Living Skills Training: communication-social skills, interpersonal skills; post-secondary education exploration; employment-resume development, interviewing skills; basic financial skills - spending habits, budgeting; Daily Living-basic cooking, home maintenance; Advocacy-disability awareness.
- Transportation - preparing for driver's knowledge permit test.
- Youth Transition Services - preparing for employment, college, living on your own and other aspects of life after high school.
Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age
- Pass a criminal background study
- Must live in the local service area or be willing to relocate prior to starting
- Capability to work independently
- Access to reliable transportation
- Knowledge of disabilities and their characteristics
- Two-year degree in a human/social services field with one year of experience in a disability-related position. Educational requirements may be substituted by experience with disabilities/disability services.
