JOB DESCRIPTION: EQUINE BARN MANAGER AND REHAB TECHNICIAN
REPORTS TO: Practice Owner, Attending Veterinarian or Technician Manager
POSITION OVERVIEW: This unique, hands-on role bridges top-tier stable management with clinical rehabilitation. You will be responsible for maintaining a pristine facility, ensuring immaculate daily care (feeding, stalling, and turnout), and executing precise physical therapy plans. From riding and hand-walking recovering athletes to assisting our overseeing veterinarian with advanced procedures, you will be the backbone of our horses' journeys back to peak performance.
EDUCATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum 1 year horse experience required
PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of 18 years old.
- Genuinely enjoys working with animals and is able to work with them even when they are stressed, ill or in pain.
- Can stay calm and efficient during a medical crisis.
- Is well-spoken and approaches his/her job duties in a mature nature.
- Is experienced in the teamwork approach and works well with all levels of clinic team members including mentorship and training of other staff
- Has outstanding client communication skills.
- Physical Effort: Work requires lifting and carrying animals (will be assisted by other staff members in lifting animals over 40 lbs). Walks or stands for extended periods of time; frequently works in a bent position.
- Working conditions: May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches and contagious diseases.
- Amateur level riding skill required
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS
WAGE RANGE
The range for the position is $20.00 per hour to $25.00 per hour. Benefits are outlined in the employee manual and are separate from the hourly wage.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
1. Barn Management & Daily Care
- Facility Maintenance: Ensure the barn, arenas, paddocks, and stalls are kept clean, safe, organized, and presentable at all times.
- Feeding & Nutrition: Administer daily grain, hay, and supplements according to strict, individualized nutritional plans.
- Herd Management: Manage daily turnouts, blanketing, and comprehensive health checks to monitor for any signs of colic, lameness, or distress.
2. Equine Rehabilitation & Exercise
- Therapeutic Exercise: Execute daily rehabilitation protocols exactly as prescribed, including controlled hand-walking, lunging, and under-saddle rehab riding (riding ability will be evaluated).
- Modality Application: Utilize therapy equipment (e.g., cold compression boots, laser therapy, nebulizers, or other therapies as applicable) safely and effectively.
- Progress Tracking: Maintain detailed, accurate logs of each horse’s daily exercise, vitals, behavior, and physical soundness.
3. Veterinary Assistance
- Clinical Support: Act as the primary assistant to the overseeing veterinarian during on-site examinations, diagnostic imaging (ultrasound/X-rays), and regenerative medicine procedures.
- Medication Administration: Safely administer oral, intramuscular (IM), and intravenous (IV) medications, bandage wounds, and manage post-op care.
- Inventory Control: Track and manage feed, bedding, medical supplies, and facility equipment maintenance.
