Job Duties and Preferred Qualifications:
The City of Virginia Beach Public Works Department is currently hiring a Heavy Equipment Operator/ Leverman| Captain to perform a variety of labor and maintenance tasks on the City dredge, piping, and related equipment, including:

Safely operate the dredging vessel (Rudee II) while excavating material in Rudee Inlet.

Safely operate the skiff (small boat), tender (tugboat), and other support equipment to maneuver the dredge and floating equipment, connect and disconnect pipelines, tow the dredge and pipelines, set and retrieve swing anchors, transport crew members, and maintain navigational aid assets.

Safely operate heavy equipment, including a backhoe, bulldozer, forklift, excavator, crane, and HDPE pipe fusion machine, in support of dredging operations.

Utilize onboard computer programs to maximize dredging production and maintain electronic logs and daily operational reports.

Monitor vessel traffic, sea state, and weather conditions to ensure the safe operation of dredging equipment and support vessels.

Promote a safe work environment by ensuring required PPE is worn, verifying the oiler performs routine inspections and documentation, conducting pre-task safety meetings, and taking appropriate precautions to prevent accidents and incidents.

Lead and supervise crew members in the absence of the supervisor, train employees in the operation and maintenance of equipment, and assign work as directed to meet operational needs.

Communicate professionally and respectfully with citizens, coworkers, and supervisors.

Follow instructions carefully and perform other related duties as assigned.
An Ideal Candidate:

Experience operating a dredge and boat.
** This position is ALPHA I and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes, snow, etc.) in response to short-term departmental needs and/or City-wide emergencies. **
Work Schedule:
Labor Day-Memorial Day: Fri. 6:30 am – 9:00 pm; Sat. 6:30 am – 8:00 pm; Sun. 6:30am 8:30 pm
Memorial Day-Labor Day: Fri. 3:30 pm – 6:00 am; Sat. 3:30 pm – 5:00 am; Sun. 3:30pm – 5:00 am
or
Labor Day – Memorial Day: 6:30 am-5:00 pm, Monday-Thursday
Memorial Day – Labor Day: 12:00 am-10:30 am
*Employee will receive an additional 5% shift differential for Memorial Day-Labor Day.*

*** Class B CDL Required - Selected candidates not already possessing a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) must be able to obtain a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License Instruction Permit within six (6) months of employment and then get a full Class A or B CDL license within the first year of employment – the probationary period. Failure to obtain a Class A or B CDL will result in termination.
CDL Hiring Bonus –
The $4,000 CDL (Class A or B) Hiring Bonus is for newly hired employees only. The bonus will be paid in three increments during the first year of employment.

Minimum Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications: Tenth grade plus five (5) years’ experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with positions as Motor Equipment Operator or Heavy Equipment Operator; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have a current and valid driver’s license. Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination. A Commercial Driver’s License may be required.
