Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Steel Purchasing Agent to join our team. This is not an entry-level position. The ideal candidate will have a proven background purchasing steel and steel-related products in a manufacturing environment. This individual will be responsible for sourcing materials, negotiating pricing, managing supplier relationships, and ensuring raw materials are available to support production schedules while maintaining cost and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Purchase carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, tubing, plate, bar stock, sheet, structural steel, and other raw materials as required.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with steel mills, distributors, and suppliers.
- Obtain and evaluate quotes while negotiating pricing, lead times, and delivery schedules.
- Issue and manage purchase orders, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery.
- Monitor inventory levels and forecast material requirements to prevent shortages or production delays.
- Work closely with production, planning, engineering, and inventory teams to meet manufacturing demands.
- Review material certifications and ensure purchased materials meet required specifications.
- Track supplier performance, resolve delivery or quality issues, and identify alternate sourcing options when necessary.
- Monitor steel market trends, pricing fluctuations, and supply chain conditions to support purchasing decisions.
- Maintain accurate purchasing records and documentation within the company's ERP/MRP system.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities while maintaining quality and supplier reliability.
Required Qualifications
- Previous experience purchasing steel is required.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of purchasing or procurement experience within a manufacturing environment.
- Strong knowledge of steel products, grades, material specifications, and manufacturing processes.
- Experience negotiating pricing, contracts, and supplier agreements.
- Proficiency with ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Strong understanding of inventory management and production planning.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience purchasing raw materials for machining, fabrication, or metal manufacturing operations.
- Knowledge of supply chain management and vendor development.
- APICS, CPM, CPSM, or related purchasing certifications are a plus.

Pay: $65,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
