Roughing It Day Camp is hiring an energetic, creative Music Counselor to lead rhythm and percussion activities for campers ages 4–16. Counselors will guide campers through a hands-on music curriculum using hand drums, rhythm sticks, maracas, and more — building foundational music skills while creating a fun, high-energy camp experience.
The Music Counselor is responsible for delivering a 8-week progressive music curriculum, leading group jams and ensemble activities, teaching concepts like steady beat, dynamics, tempo, and rhythm patterns, and helping campers build confidence and creativity through music.
This is an active, expressive position ideal for someone who loves music, enjoys working with children, and wants to spend their summer making noise — the good kind.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 19 years old
- Completed at least 1 year of college prior to summer season preferred
- Musical background with strong rhythm and percussion skills
- Experience working or volunteering with children
- Ability to lead and manage groups of campers in an outdoor or active setting
- Ability to obtain American Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification
- Ability to commit to Mon – Fri, June 15 – August 7
Responsibilities:
- Lead and supervise music and rhythm activities for campers of all ages
- Deliver a structured 8-week music curriculum covering beat, dynamics, rhythm patterns, and ensemble playing
- Teach campers to play percussion instruments including hand drums, rhythm sticks, and maracas
- Facilitate group activities such as call-and-response patterns, group jams, and “Build a Band” ensemble sessions
- Create a welcoming, inclusive environment where every camper feels encouraged to participate
- Organize and maintain music equipment and program supplies
- Assist with camp transportation and serve as a backup bus counselor when needed
- Supervise campers during structured and unstructured camp activities
- Attend staff meetings and complete all required staff training
- Assist in other areas of camp as needed
