Knowing math is important. Being able to get a frustrated 10-year-old to actually work through it is more important.
Mathnasium of Westwood-River Vale is looking for a part-time Math Instructor/Tutor to work with K–12 students, typically in small groups of about three.
You'll teach math concepts, help with homework and test prep, keep students focused, and document their progress.
Some students will be eager to learn. Others will be distracted, frustrated, or convinced they're just "bad at math." You need the patience to redirect them, sometimes repeatedly, while still holding them accountable.
You do not need to be an expert with every age group or every level of math. Some of our instructors are strongest with younger students, while others shine with middle or high school students. We'll figure out where you're strongest.
We're looking for someone who:
- Has prior experience working with children or teens, such as tutoring, teaching, coaching, camp, childcare, or similar experience
- Is comfortable with math and willing to complete a math assessment as part of the hiring process
- Is patient, dependable, and able to manage multiple students at once
- Can be encouraging while still being firm when a student needs to refocus
- Communicates well with both students and staff
- Shows up consistently and takes their responsibilities seriously
- Can work independently without needing constant supervision
This probably isn't a good fit if you get frustrated easily with kids, struggle to stay organized, are frequently unavailable, or are simply looking for an easy after-school job.
The reward is seeing a student who was struggling start to understand, build confidence, and sometimes completely change how they feel about math.
We provide training, supportive management, an after-school schedule, and opportunities to take on more responsibility for instructors who want to grow.
