Position Summary
Under general supervision and with general instruction, the Machinist Level II performs moderately complex machining operations involving machine tools. The position plans, lays out, sets up, and operates various types of lathes, milling machines, grinding machines, and potentially CNC equipment to manufacture developmental, production, and maintenance parts to exacting tolerances and dimensions.
Key Responsibilities
- Review engineering drawings, sketches, graphic illustrations, and verbal or written instructions to determine machining requirements and sequence of operations.
- Calculate angular and linear dimensions and determine appropriate machining processes.
- Select cutting and grinding tools, work-holding methods, machine speeds, and feeds.
- Set up and operate horizontal and vertical lathes, milling machines, and grinding machines.
- Operate CNC equipment as required.
- Improvise and adapt standard tooling to meet machining requirements.
- Perform machining operations including:
- Turning and facing
- Boring and chamfering
- Taper turning
- Drilling and reaming
- Grooving
- Compound and multiple-angle machining
- Radii
- Splines and serrations
- Keyways
- Perform helical and spiral milling, drilling, reaming, boring, tapping, slotting, and dovetailing.
- Machine both ferrous and non-ferrous metals and their alloys.
- Load, cut, secure, and position raw stock in machining equipment.
- Grind and maintain cutting tools, drills, and bits.
- Perform preventive maintenance on machining equipment as required.
- Troubleshoot non-routine machining problems and recommend solutions.
- Maintain workflow within the assigned work area.
- Follow all applicable laws, regulations, company policies, safety procedures, and operating practices.
- Maintain a safe work environment at all times.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma, technical/trade school training, or equivalent.
- Minimum 3 years of related machining experience.
- Ability to perform semi-routine and moderately complex machine setups and fabrication with limited direction.
- Strong knowledge of machining equipment and safe operating practices.
- Ability to read and understand engineering drawings, blueprints, sketches, diagrams, and written/verbal instructions.
- Ability to independently troubleshoot non-routine machining problems and recommend appropriate solutions.
- Ability to determine tooling, work-holding methods, speeds, and feeds.
- Basic computer skills.
- Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability and willingness to work extended hours when required.
Preferred / Additional Qualifications
- Experience operating CNC machines.
- Experience with both manual and CNC machining.
- Experience working with ferrous and non-ferrous metals and alloys.
- Experience with complex machining operations, including helical/spiral milling, splines, serrations, keyways, compound angles, and radii.
- Experience grinding and maintaining cutting tools.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and handle materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to load and secure raw stock into machining equipment.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform machining tasks for extended periods.
- Ability to safely operate industrial machining equipment.
Work Environment
This position works in a manufacturing/machining environment and requires adherence to established safety procedures and operating practices. The Machinist Level II is expected to maintain a safe, clean, and productive work area and demonstrate sound judgment when operating machinery.
