About Us
Let’s be honest: most people hear “HR” and think of awkward trainings, passive-aggressive break room signs, and a 40-page handbook nobody’s opened since onboarding.
We’re trying to be the exception.
At Tradewind Consulting, we believe HR shouldn’t be painful — not for the employees living under the policies, and not for the people writing them. And yeah, we know the joke: “HR just makes a bunch of stupid rules.” Sure, Karen — but we wouldn’t need half of them if people didn’t do the thing that made the rule necessary in the first place.
That’s basically our whole philosophy: mission over mess. We do the unglamorous compliance work so our clients can run their businesses without getting blindsided by a regulation they didn’t know existed. No fluff, no jargon for jargon’s sake, no policies that exist just to exist.
So, if you’re an HR pro who actually enjoys digging into the legal weeds, can write a handbook clause that a human being can actually understand, and wants real flexibility instead of a soul-crushing 9-to-5 — keep reading. We need someone who knows Washington State employment law cold (bonus points for OR, AK, ID, or CA), works independently without needing a babysitter, and hits deadlines without being chased.
Remote. Contract. 10–40 hours/month depending on workload. Real potential to grow with us.
No drama. Just good HR work, done right.
Role Details
- Location: Fully remote (local to Western WA is a plus purely for potential in-person collaboration with the team)
- Engagement type: Independent contractor (1099)
- Hours: Approximately 10–40 hours per month, variable based on active projects and client load
- Salary: Pay is determined by the nature of the client relationship (membership, ad hoc, project-based). Ad hoc work ranges from $60.00 - $75.00 per hour. Projects will be paid at 30-40% of the scoped fixed-fee project rate (payable to contractor) for project-based engagements. Compensation structure will be discussed based on the specific engagement
- Client interaction: Non-client-facing initially; client-facing responsibilities may be introduced as skill and accuracy are demonstrated
- Growth path: Potential to transition to a part-time or full-time employee role based on performance and business need
About the Role
Tradewind Consulting is seeking an experienced HR professional to join our team as a contract HR Consultant. This is a remote, project-based role ideal for someone who thrives working independently, delivers precise and accurate work, and wants flexibility without sacrificing meaningful, substantive HR work.
You’ll focus on the documentation and compliance side of HR — policy and handbook review, revision, and drafting as well as compliance audits — supporting our clients’ compliance-related needs across multiple states. This is a behind-the-scenes role to start: you won’t be client-facing initially, but as you demonstrate strong accuracy and reliability, there’s real potential to grow into client-facing work and, beyond that, a potential path to an employee position.
What You’ll Do
- Review, audit, and revise client employee handbooks for compliance and clarity
- Review and update HR policies to reflect current state and federal employment law
- Conduct client compliance audits to reveal and solve for gaps in current policies
- Research and track changes in employment law, primarily in Washington State
- Draft policy language and recommend updates based on regulatory changes
- Maintain detailed, organized documentation of work performed for each client
- Manage multiple client projects simultaneously, prioritizing based on deadlines

- Track record of meeting deadlines consistently and reliably
- Comfortable managing fluctuating workload and shifting priorities across clients
- Laptop/computer, reliable high-speed internet, and a dedicated, confidential workspace suitable for handling sensitive client and employee data
A Plus
- Experience with employment law in Oregon, Alaska, Idaho, and/or California
- HR experience in varied industries
- Experience working in a consulting, agency, or multi-client environment
- Background in policy writing or employee handbook development
