Street Department Equipment Operator I
Overview:
The City of Harrison Street Department is accepting resumes and applications for an Equipment Operator I. Applicants should have knowledge of street maintenance, road construction, asphalt repair, drainage systems, traffic control, and the operation of heavy equipment used in municipal street maintenance. Applicants must have the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 90 days of employment and be capable of safely operating heavy equipment including backhoes, skid steers, excavators, front-end loaders, dump trucks, motor graders, rollers, tractors, street sweepers, and other equipment as assigned.Applicants must be able to perform the duties of a skilled laborer when equipment operation is not required. The successful applicant must work well with others, maintain a positive attitude, and be willing to work in adverse weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and emergency situations.
Overtime, weekend, and emergency call-out work may be required. Additional job duties will be discussed during the interview.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of street construction and maintenance methods, materials, and equipment.
- Knowledge of asphalt patching, concrete repair, grading, drainage systems, and erosion control.
- Ability to safely operate heavy equipment under a variety of weather and job site conditions.
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.
- Ability to perform minor maintenance and routine servicing on equipment.
- Knowledge of proper traffic control procedures and work zone safety.
- Good physical condition with the ability to perform strenuous manual labor.
Acceptable Experience and Training
Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, along with considerable experience operating heavy construction or maintenance equipment. Experience in municipal street maintenance, highway construction, excavation, or similar public works operations is preferred.
Examples of Work
- Operates dump trucks, backhoes, skid steers, front-end loaders, excavators, motor graders, rollers, tractors, street sweepers, and snow removal equipment.
- Repairs potholes using hot mix and cold patch asphalt.
- Performs street resurfacing, grading, and road base preparation.
- Installs, repairs, and cleans storm drains, culverts, ditches, and drainage structures.
- Removes debris from streets, rights-of-way, and drainage areas.
- Installs and repairs street signs, barricades, guardrails, and traffic control devices.
- Assists with sidewalk, curb, and gutter construction and repairs.
- Pours and finishes concrete for sidewalks, curbs, gutters, drive approaches, and other public improvements.
- Sets grades using laser or survey equipment as required.
- Performs brush removal, tree trimming, mowing, and vegetation control within public rights-of-way.
- Responds to emergency situations including flooding, storm damage, snow and ice removal, and roadway hazards.
- Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs on department equipment.
- Conducts daily inspections of assigned vehicles and equipment.
- Performs manual labor including shoveling, lifting, raking, digging, and loading materials.
- Follows all safety policies, OSHA regulations, and City policies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
