Summary:
The surgical technologist student program is an exciting and challenging opportunity for surgical technology students to apply and advance their knowledge and skills gained in the classroom to the real-world practice while continuing their education. This program seeks to promote surgical technology at Faith Health and positively impact the recruitment of graduate surgical technologists.
The surgical technology student reports to the manager/director of surgical services and is partnered with a surgical technologist preceptor who develops and supervises the student’s experience. The preceptor retains full accountability and responsibility of the patients assigned and works within their defined scope practice. The student will not function independently at any time.
Under the direction of their preceptor, the surgical technology student will work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel in delivering patient care to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures and to ensure that operating room equipment functions properly.
The surgical technology student must demonstrate competency in technical skills generally learned/acquired while completing the surgical technology program. Job duties can expand as skills are learned and competencies are determined by their preceptor but will not at any time function independently. The goal is to enhance skill acquisition through on the job training and validation.
The surgical technology student will be a vital part of the healthcare team and will perform cohesively and collaboratively as a partner with their preceptor and other interdisciplinary healthcare team members. The care delivered is individualized, goal directed and will provide high quality and safe care.

Responsibilities:
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Demonstrates ability to appropriately modify approach and procedures to meet needs of age/diversity of population served for the following age groups:
- Neonate (birth – 28 days)
- Infant (29 days – less than 1 year)
- Pediatric/Child (1 year – 12 years)
- Adolescent (12 years – 18 years)
- Adult (18 years – 65 years)
- Geriatric (over 65 years)
- Incorporates cultural considerations in the provisions of care.
- Knowledge of growth and developmental stages.
- Considers life changes/effects on health beliefs and behaviors.
- Provides necessary safety measures.
- Provides information and involves family/caregiver in decision making.
2. Will experience operation of sterilizing equipment.
3. Possesses knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique.
4. Possesses knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and surgical instruments.
5. With the direction and oversight of their preceptor prepares the sterile setup for the appropriate procedure and anticipates the needs of the surgeons.
6. Assists with proper care, maintenance, and replacement of surgical instruments.
7. With the direction and oversight of their preceptor performs technical aspects of patient care according to established policies and procedures.
8. Will learn how to respond in crisis and/or emergency situations.
9. Effectively communicates with surgical team members. Promotes and shares knowledge in their area of expertise. Promotes an environment of safety and quality. Communicates concerns appropriately and timely.
10. Helps preceptor update preference cards as needed.
11. Attends and/or completes required education.
12. Assists preceptor to achieve correct par levels and monitors outdates closely.
Hours will be dependent on patient census and workload. Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule, to include after-hours and weekends as necessary.

The requirements listed below must be representative of the knowledge, skills, minimum education, training, licensure, experience, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION (Minimum Requirements for Position):
Enrolled in a school of Technology required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Basic Life Support (BLS) obtained within one full month from date of hire required (Travelers-required upon hire).
Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) obtained from an accredited central supply technology training program within 1 year from date of graduation required.

EXPERIENCE:
Previous clinical experience preferred.

SKILLS:
Language Skills – Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language required.
